No oil pressure.
« on: August 27, 2020, 02:51:26 PM »
Changed oil today, now lost oil pressure, didn’t change filter but drained oil from filter housing. Any tips! Prime?  And yes I have put oil back in.

I’ve ever had to prime my 550. Maybe the wire has come off the pressure switch or the switch has died.

550's etc don't need priming, just use the kick start (with ignition off) to get oil around the engine and when you turn ignition on make sure oil light  goes out within a few seconds of starting the engine. If the light doesn't go out, check connection to oil pressure switch. How much oil did you put back in?

I will check wiring - the red light is staying on. I have only put 2 1/2 litres in so far and that is put level to top mark on dip stick. I suspect that the filter area is not filled with oil yet as it was all drained. Reluctant to start engine again until it is sorted. Think it should be about 3.2 litres capacity with filter change.

Just after the rebuild I had the same issue. I just ran until oil pressure came up and was just fine after that. But didn’t like running it with oil pressure light on. I don’t remember having any trouble before rebuild with oil pressure issues. Would quite fancy trying another oil pump.

Did you check oil level with dipstick screwed in or resting on thread?

If you turn the engine over 20 times on the kick start (ignition off) and then check the oil level, is it still on the same place on the dip stick?

20 kicks no difference on oil level so gave it another 20 still no difference. Still sitting at top mark.

So after that many kicks, oil should have circulated fully. Have you checked the connection to the oil pressure switch yet?

Not yet Julie, would the light still come on if there was a problem with connection? Also I have had the bike started, very briefly and I am quite sure there is an oil pressure issue.

I think, but could be totally wrong,  the light would stay on if the wiring wasn't connected properly somewhere along the line. Did you have a problem with the oil pump before?

Never had any issues prior to strip and rebuild. I had this issue on initial start up after rebuild, so suspected oil pressure switch, a new switch was fitted and made no difference at the time. But eventually oil pressure came up and all went quiet. And never had any problems since, until now. I suspect there is not a lot wrong with oil pump since done 500 odd miles.
