Honda CB550 Twin-disc setup
« on: November 22, 2009, 05:57:29 PM »
Using bits from a CB500T I managed to get the installation done. The main thing was the speedo drive, but by modifying the original item without the chrome ring it worked perfectly.

The good thing was that with Vesrah rubbish pads in one side and Ferodo decent pads in the other,it was like early-ABS on a bike....the Ferodo side would brake ok in any weather, but the Vesrah side just wouldn't work at all in the wet.
The splitter under the headlamp was used ok,with a double banjo bolt in the place of a single for a single disc setup.

This was my summer commuter setup, but during the winter I had the original F1 forks with the fork gaiters and the single disc, together with a 4.10x19 Avon Roadrunner.

When I sold this F1 I put the twin disc setup on to the wifes CB550F2.

Hi Andy.

The discs are standard 550F/K,500F/T. Just drilled for lightness. Did them on my pillar drill to a set pattern.

Hi Yoshi,

Going to give this a go myself, any advice (particularly what you did to modify the speedo drive) is greatly appreciated

Best regards,

Swidds

Yes Paul. There are two flats on the hub where the speedo adapter fits on the flat. By cutting the flat part of the apter to bend down it will mate with the two flats. I found that this was the easiest way rather than trying to buy the special part that Dixon Racing used to sell for loads of money. The speedo gearbox will then bolt straight up with the use of longer bolts.

You'd need another caliper obviously, a double banjo bolt & the relevant brackets to bolt the caliper to the right hand fork leg, which, so long as you've not got 500 Four forks, should have the mounting holes on it already. I bought some Aeroquip lines that did away with the rigid line, one to each caliper so that I could always run a single disc if I needed to.

If you wanted to use 750 discs they're a bigger diameter so you'd only need the caliper mount bracket to change the angle of this part.
