That looks like a great evening, hopefully soon I will be back on the road, this getting old is fun, heart attack, new knee and now the cataract in my one good eye has been fixed so I can see properly again. My 4 weeks of no lifting is over so the F1 can get a service and new tyres and I'll be back on the road.

Cheers

Went on a ride out last night to Porthcawl and met up with a few people from our club and a few others. The ride was marred by the 400 intermittently cutting out on 2 cylinders, 1,4 being the culprit.  I rode home with a mate from the IAM on his Guzzi outfit and an IAM observer on his BMW.  Again, the fault reappeared on the way home.
Today, I checked the wiring to the coils, cleaned up some of the bullets, cleaned and gapped all the plugs.  I hope that's fixed it.
Apart from the hastle, a great ride and some excellent cod and chips.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

I would have look at the condenser for 1-4, i have had a lot of problems with replacement condensers recently so it's one of the first things i suspect.

Love that Rickman in the picture. Looks really good with that single seat, standard exhaust and in that colour - remember a group of Welsh lads  (south Wales I think)who stayed each year in the same guest house as me at the TT (mid 70's to early eighties) had Rickmans at one stage - mad as hatters on them - they where always first out on the road when the roads open car went past and barriers lifted (or was it the marshals bikes - can't remember what was used due to old age!) and try and catch/overtake it! Used to call them the 'mad Taffs'! (hope that doesn't constitute racist in these politically correct times!
Current Bikes:-
Honda CB750K2 (1975)
Honda CB500K2 (12/1972)
Honda CR750 Replica (1972)
Honda CB350K0 (1969)
Kawasaki ZZR1100D3 (1995)
Kawasaki ZZR250 (1990) Project (Going on eBay ASAP)

It's got a Dyna S system, no points, condensers etc.  Anyway, I rode it to work and back and it's OK.  Not sure yet whether it's fixed because it was an intermittent fault but so far, good

Hate to tell you but Dyna, especially S, have been having failures according to US forum plus they have a high current draw and need top battery voltage which the charging systems frquently cant supply

I'm using 5 ohm coils.  Some people use 3 ohm or less and the system has excessive current consumption and overheating.

My understanding of it is that often a lower resistance coil has been advised to give a "high energy" output, with it as much of a bodge as it appears.

5 ohm is used with points on these bikes as the dwell, although at the same angle throughout rev range, alters in time with crank speed. And so and aggregated specification of 5 ohm allows them not to overheat at continuous low rpm through over saturation, but still making decent spark at high rpm.

Electronic doesn't ordinarily vary dwell, it just uses the crankshaft pulse as a starting trigger ( if designed properly) to then let the transistor circuit switch coil saturation at ideal and constant dwell, for any rpm. As such it shouldn't draw any more demand at low rpm as the logic internal to system cuts input without overrun, but still makes the same dwell time at full rpm.

The coils should match the advice given for the system in use. 5ohm coils on 3ohm designed dwell should give sub optimal performance at full rpm.

Apologies for thread drift as it's a technical subject that's not part of the great travel stories on this one.  :)

Nice little pootle out today on the 550 Mongrels. When we were out on Sunday, we saw this lovely old Royal Mail delivery van. Never seen it around here before but it belongs to a chap in our village.
