On David silver,

green and brown bearing shells, explanation?

Oil drain bolt and washer, are the these the two drain points at the front of the engine? look like tappet cover only smaller and made of very soft ally with a sealing o ring. the ones on mine did not survive the removal and i shall need some new ones.

cheers in advance

Hello Captain, i can't help you with the bearings question soz , but the drain plugs you have taken out aren't the sump plug, i'm not familiar with the 500/550's but would have thought the sump plug would be towards the front of the engine on the sump  ;) cheers Mick.

The drain bolt (and washer) are at the lowest point of the sump, facing the front. The two alloy covers are just oil gallery covers (I think) - they look like small tappet covers.

Here are a couple of scans from the parts book. If you'd like the whole thing in pdf, let me know.

Looking at the diagram for the sump plate takes me back a few years.I had my first 550F1 so this was 1978. I had gone over a kerb at some time and I didn't realise that the sump drain plug at the front of the sump plate had kissed the kerb.
A few days later I did an oil change round at a friends house. No problems until I came to replenish the engine with new oil.My friends commented that there was oil all over the floor, but I thought they were having a laugh and I kept on pouring. It wasn't until I noticed that the ground was covered in this ever increasing pool of oil that I realised that there was something wrong.I had done up the drain plug with no problem...or so I thought. When I had kissed the kerb a few days before I hadn't realised that it had cracked the part of the sump plate where the drain bolt screws into place....oops!
Luckily I got a lift into Lewisham and Parks Honda had one in stock,as well as a new gasket. But it was money that I would rather not have had to spend, but it was a lesson learned.

As for the bearing shells...
http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/parts/part_4958/
and
http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/parts/part_4959/

they denote the clearance between the crankshaft journel and the shell. There are normally a set of figures stamped onto the crankcases. These and the numbers on the conrods will dictate which shells that are required for that particular engine.

Don't mean to be rude but if you are asking about the shells you relly need to read the proper Honda manual carefully first

I quite agree...but I do not think that anybody would attempt to strip and fully rebuild an engine from a post on a forum. I have just read through the selection process of shell colours in the CB500F shop manual, but it is a little too long for me to type up or to scan with sufficient quality as to reproduce it here.

Like I said didn't mean to offend, I am old, cranky at times and tell it like it is. I try to give genuine and hopefully helpful advice having worked in various main Honda dealers. Bearing selection is not the easiest job even when you have been doing it for years, I still treble check to make sure i got it right and i started on hondas back in neanderthal times (1970's), unless physically damaged on stripdown or oil changes neglected shells rarely need replacement.

The caps you want are the same on all 500/550/750 EXCEPT for the one held in by the generator cover which is 500/550---dont loose that one they are difficult to get now.

The 500/550 is one of the easiest to work on needing no special tools except for carb balancing.

The K3 is the bastard child of the range being a 2 yr only model and having different exhausts(now unobtainable) and one model only carbs/airbox/inlet rubbers--also unobtainable easily

Thanks for the info Bryanj very helpful

I always prefer to ask the personal knowledge of people first and consult the books also, so all very appreciated indeed.

Carbs/inlet rubbers i have are excellent and running single pod filters.

and thank the sweet lord for Carb tune!

cheers

Oil gallery cover thingies- I'm sure the several scrap engine cases around the place will surrender a set, so long as they don't get mashed in the removal process say
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock
