Soldering Iron Recommendations
« on: March 31, 2021, 07:03:34 AM »
I'm sure there are Members here that are a 'dab hand' at the art of soldering. I'm using one of those cheap Draper ones but looking to upgrade so any recommendations appreciated.

Usually I'm just repairing looms so just electrical connection and that's not too frequently. Then there's the best solder to use, what I have came from  Maplins years ago and was made in Asia.

I use 2, a Weller electric solder gun and a gas powered portasol and only 60/40 fluxed electric solder not plumblers which has minimal lead and has to be a lot hotter to flow

Make sure you get a temperature controlled iron and don't use the lead free solder

I'll second that I have to use it at work and it is SH1T don't go near the stuff at home as I don't have to be RoHS compliant  ;D ;D

I have the Weller Gun Type that's a good 25 years old now. If you use the wrong flux e.g.the plumbers type it will rot the wires I have found - learnt to my cost when I wired some outside speakers up. Wiring failed after 2 years the flux had corroded a good couple of inches up the cables! Had to replace the cables as they were left too short.

I don't like that new fangled unleaded stuff, it just doesn't flow properly.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?
