Recommended front tyre for 500 K1
« on: September 25, 2021, 07:05:29 PM »
Having just had a rear puncture I realised that my tyres and tubes are at least 20 years old and deserve attention. I remember trying to fit the widest tyres possible at the time, something that hasn't been too much of a problem in the 8,000 miles or so I've done since then but I've noticed that the front tyre is really close to the mudguard, you could just about get a fag paper between the tyre and the metal bar that is welded to the inside of the mudguard for the brake hose holder and it has slightly rubbed on the side of the tyre. (see pic).

I've always had really bad wobbles when taking my hands off the bars but have got so used to it I haven't done anything about it until now.

The tyre currently fitted is an Avon Roadrunner AM20 3.25H19.

Has anyone got any recommendations for a decent replacement that will give slightly more clearance to the mudguard and hopefully sort out the steering wobbles?

Funny as I've used a 4.10x19 tyre on the front with no problems.

What's the clearance like on the other side? you may have the spindle in the wrong way.
I’ll have to check that. I know it’s not as bad because it doesn’t have the little bracket for the brake hose on that side.

One of my bikes has the original tyre. Bridgstone Superspeed. 3.25 x 19. It is 93.3mm at its widest.
On the bike I use most I went against fitting wider tyres and have a Avon Roadrider 90/90 19. It is 93mm wide, but has a lower height profile than the Bridgstone so looks small. But has been fine, with quick handling and I love it.

I used to have the 90/90 f and 100/90R

But it lowers the bike to much and scrapes the stands and footrest

I can see the straight height is not that much difference only a few mm, but the rounded profile is more pronounced on the Avon. At 5'3" it may make it easier for me, plus to much traffic around here for much scratching. Maybe also mean it's difficult to get on the centre stand for a feeble pensioner. The 500 stands are not great with standard tyres. The 550Fs and K3s are much better.

I think that's the best for original look, including the profile, and with modern rubber.

Just by way of housekeeping, I've resolved the problem by fitting a new Avon Roadrider 3.25 x 19 tyre. Looks lovely and now plenty of clearance. Thanks for all the advise.
