I'm geting old
« on: October 10, 2021, 07:54:14 PM »
I decided to get round to fitting the new tyres today, got the bike out of the garage, nice sunny day, the back brake was a bit sticky so I thought that I would also check that while I had the back wheel out.

Got the back wheel out, got the caliper off, stripped it cleaned all the bits and it looked fine.

Wrestled with the tyre but got it off eventually it was a bit hard, mind you I fitted it around 2007 (TT100), then I did something stupid, I fitted the new tyre and tube using tyre levers and I pinched the tube which resulted in two holes in the tube.

Years ago I did the same and swore that I would not use tyre levers again and I didn't until today, old age creeping up on me again.

So I fitted the tyre and tube the way I have done it for many years,
1. Put the new tyre on the rim (one side)
2. Take the valve out of the tube, insert the tube into the tyre and inflate to get it to seat into the tyre.
3. Place the wheel disc side down.
4. Using heels and toes push the tyre onto the rim, took me 5 minutes and no fuss or pinching, I did make sure that I was near a wall for balance though.

Replace the valve and inflate the tyre, check it is even around the rim, deflate and bounce if not.

I then replaced the wheel, refilled the master cylinder with brake fluid and bled it, I cheat and have speed bleeders fitted so it was easy and quick.

This took me all day and I was worn out at the end, what happened to the days when I could take a wheel out and repair a puncture by the road side with not fuss.

Cheers

Everything becomes slower and more difficult as one gets older, and not only that, after retirement, there aren't enough hours in the day to do absolutely nothing.

That is the truth, I'm finding it more and more difficult to fit everything that I want to do into a day despite getting up at 8 o'clock, must be because I'm slower doing it.

And don't forget the "what if" syndrome, the older you get, the more time you spend wondering what will happen (go wrong?) before you start something, instead of just doing it.

I now find myself thinking on some of the bikes that there is a good chance I will never have to fit another tyre on that bike as the chances are I will never wear it out.

About three weeks ago I was convinced after rebuilding one of my C90 wheels I had nipped the tube. So proceeded to remove wheel tyre and tube, replace tube with new one and back on bike, which didn’t take long if you say it quick. Inflated tube that I removed couldnt find a hole anywhere and that tube is still inflated weeks later. What a complete waste of time that was. Look on the bright side I still have a spare tube 😂😂

Glad that I'm not alone, and as Moorey said I probably will not wear out another tyre on this bike, mind you the ones I'm taking off are not worn at all, just old and hard.
And as Ka Ja says I do tend to over think things instead of just doing them, plus I spend more time double checking that I did tighten that thing.

Cheers

It's a variation on locking your front door then going back and trying the handle.

Changing tyres at 64 is probably like changing a tanks tracks at 24.  :o I just plain pay a garage to do it for me!  ;D

Put my knee out and sprained my ankle fitting Avon Roadriders - vicious bastards.

Next time I’m paying a tyre fitter.

One thing is certain, I certainly will not ever again repeat a job from my twenties, lift an excavator 10ft up and off its king post using 20 ton jacks and chocking it with railway sleepers, 6 inch at a time.
