Cam chain adjuster bolt bodge!
« on: November 12, 2021, 02:54:28 PM »
Getting ready for the winter fettle and noticed this - carried out by earlier owner I guess! The bolt is an Allen head bolt going into the housing and there appears to be a steel dowel/pin going right through the housing (blue arrow) it protrudes by same length other side of housing, it looks like some cockeyed attempt to lock the Allen bolt in position. Why I've no idea ?
TBH I've never attempted adjustment of the cam chain, as I run on the it ain't broke don't fix it principle!
However I have a oil leak to l/h/s just below rocker box and I suspect an oil restrictor valve rubber has gone, so while I'm there have a look? Albeit would mean removing barrels etc and revealing what ever horrors lie within.
I'm loathe to remove/undo it as bike runs fine at the moment.

No Bill, Graham would throw those engine cases in the skip if he couldn't repair it properly. 'Do it right or don't bother doing it at all' is one of Graham's favourite sayings and he sticks to it rigidly.

Thats not even the pinch bolt that locks the plunger, i think ts where the cap that locks the plunger goes.
Time for total strip out and repair using the stainless repair kit reported on elsewhere

Whoever did that clearly had no idea how the tensioner works.

Hopefully you might be able to tap a small thread where the pin goes through the casing to cap off each end otherwise its what alloy welding?

Know the bit you mean Bryan, don't suppose it's an external fit without getting into engine he said hopefully 😉

The machining can be done with the engine complete but its a risk with swarf and may well have to come out to get space BUT the plunger frequently siezes and the horseshoe gets damaged and they both need the cases split

You cant leave that, why would somebody do that anyway, its not achieving anything???

Split them or you'll never get it out of your head when you ride it, thats not what riding's all about........Its supposed to be a stress reliever not a "mmm, best go easy now that  i know that bolts there) scenario.

I couldn't leave that my head wouldn't have it, it'd be like knowing that the brake lines are leaking or similar! Bite the bullet and get t done......Sorry!
A tap that small is going to have a farty little thread and wouldn't be right and quite hard to do there. Besides it'd be a bodged bodge and wouldn't be a great one at that. Fix the route of the issue (the PO obviously thought there was an issue) rather than putting a sticking plaster over it. The actual ally weld wont be expensive, it's just a time thing to get over splitting the cases.

Dont mean to be the harbinger of doom, apologies ::)

Most likely the tensioner is seized on the horseshoe pivot but if the cam chain is not rattling you could attempt a repair without stripping the engine for a couple of years. If you do decide to take the engine out be warned you can easily spend a grand in parts etc.
