Chain adjuster question.
« on: April 02, 2010, 06:34:36 PM »
I've got two 550 swingarms and a set of 550 chain adjusters - and they don't appear to fit correctly. Picture below doesn't really do justice to it but there is a 1mm gap between the swingarm plates and the inside edges of the adjusters. Is this normal?  Should I expect this to close up when the axle is tightened....seems unlikely as the gap is so large.

Can someone post a close-up piccie of a fitted adjuster so I can see how that looks - I don't think I've missed anything out but can only think that the adjusters aren't actually 550 ones.

Cheers!

I think that looks about right, way I'd look at it if you tried to tighten the radius of the bends at the back of the adjuster (to decrease the gap) then the meatal would be stresed and risk breaking as it is it has tensile strength and the tightness of the spindle nut is what actually takes the strain anyway.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

There are 2 different swing arms and adjusters

Early is wider with removable end piece and wider gap adjuster

Later is thinner with closed end and narrower gap adjuster

Has somebody done an incorrect mix-n-match?

My 500 has the "removeable end piece" - the 550F2 is like yours.

Thanks for the info. I think I might have the wider adjusters with the thinner swingarm....  However, I also have what I believe are the CB650 adjusters - will need to post a piccie of these - which are fairly narrow and probably the ones to use as the gap with those is fairly minimal.

The metal on yours does seem thinner than my 550. And there's no gap on mine. So poss that they are from a different model.

Do you want me to go and measure them?

Yes please - no rush though. I'll  take a couple of piccies and measurements of mine too.
Thanks.
