Small oil seal in spedo wheel hub where cable fits
« on: December 21, 2021, 11:06:14 PM »
I'm trying to find the size of the oil seal that fits down the spedo cable hole in the front hub.

The part number is not listed in the parts book & can't spot it on the DS site - I do have a number that may or may not be correct 91256-657-920?

Does anyone know the seal size please?

I had one from DS but the invoices do not list the part numbers so I can't find it - I think it was Oddjob that gave me the size of the larger double lipped seal that fits in the hub.

I have sourced a good used hub that I want to fit new seals in - hence I need another small seal - when I use the quoted part number on the DS site it does not say what seal it is - plus it's out of stock!

I usually list seal dimensions on my rebuild log but this one I did not record - I think it might be -  4.8 x 15 x 4 but not certain enough to order one from elsewhere.

Try the seal that is fitted to the CB500/550 tacho drive Ted. Almost certain it's the same. I got one out the other week, hooked it out with a hooked scribe and of course the little bugger flew across the garage and has successfully resisted all efforts to find it. It should be marked with size if you can get one out.

The tacho drive seal is 4.8 x 14.5 Ted. So maybe not

91256-657-920 is indeed the oil seal for a 500 four and it is 4.8X15X4mm. Should be easy enough to pick up at simply bearings for not very much money. Here you go:

And yet CMS quote that part number as 4.8 x 14.5 not 15. Odd.

Not on my PC Oddjob, they quote 4.8x15x4mm too:

Ah, I see now Oddjob. That's a different part number to the one in this thread. Ted posted 91256-657-920 and the CMSNL one is part number 91256-096-651. I have no idea which one is the correct seal for Ted's bike?

I've taken the risk for £2.87 delvered by mule - I think the DS ones are around £5.00.

The seal has arrived - it's the right one - also my replacement used worm drive hub - looks in good condition too - bought on e-bay from twowheelspares - this is the shop link. They accepted an offer £4 below asking price.https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/dkmotorcyclespares

My original unt had been painted with silver Hamerite paint - this replacement does not appear to have been painted - not sure what the factory orignal finish is - I'm tempted to just buff it up its so tidy.looking.https://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/advanced_search_result.php?search_in_description=1&keywords=4.8X15X4& , this was the right seal the lower of the ph0tos as per sye first link..

Have you removed the internals or is there no plastic inside?

I'm tempted to join the polishers group😊

It's just a bare shell now Ted. Got it free off EBay, seller claimed it was NOS so I bought it for £15, when it arrived it was seized solid and was clearly second hand, complained and he refunded the money and said to keep it. Thought I'd see how it worked and took it apart, sanded all the casting marks etc off it and it came up ok. The internals freed off once they were apart, the grease was like rock. I have the original one off my bike, so i'll do the same to that as well and then flog one I think. Could polish it but there's a lot already polished on the bike, including the outer rims of my Lester mags and the fork sliders.
