It's already illegal to remove a diesel particulate filter. These things have a habit of sneaking in.

I don't have a say in what goes on in your country but it would be a big deal here if the government tried to outlaw pattern parts. We have a huge aftermarket parts industry in the US. Not so long ago VW got caught for scamming the diesel emissions testing. The vehicles burned really clean when hooked up to the emission testers. When unplugged the computer ran a different fuel map to make better power and put it put out much more emissions. VW had to buy back the vehicles unless the owner wanted to keep it. You can't trust the manufacturers or the government to do the right thing.
Greed is rampant in the world these days. There are so many that want more than their share.

This is worth a watch and informs of the government's real intentions of future transport policy for us all.
The bright side though is by the time we are all effectively banned from owning any form of personal transport I'll be too old to care 😁

Signed. Like most government schemes its motives might be to reduce emissions or at least be seen to do something about it, but ultimately the details are influenced by lobbyists etc and the result is likely to be scrapping more vehicles and actually a net gain in emissions given the high cost in emissions of creating not to mention recycling vehicles. Vehicle manufacturers will make more money. I can accept electric vehicles are part of the solution for example, but it's not going to be the best solution at least with current tech if for example you don't do high mileage where the fixed emissions of creating and recycling vehicles will be higher than just carrying on with older tech.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

IMHO electric cars at present are an exercise in moving the exhuast pipe from vehicle to power stations.

Why are we doing this - I'm not convinced global warming is primarily man made.

The sweeping statistics about carbon footprint calculations are IMAO as reliable as current weather forecasts - the last attempt at improving air & water quality world wide has just resulted in all dirty manufacturing processes moving to third world countries or those that did not sign up to the deal.

This thread is inching towards the point where the boss (me!) says “enough”.

I'm waiting for someone I actually know buy an electric bike. There is a local lad who rides his electric scooter on the highway he must be doing 20 mph plus - how can it be cool to ride a kids toy - might be a glimpse of the future.

It is a useful question to ask.

When does an electric bike become a “ powered two wheeler”?

Electric bike  < 250 watts
Electric moped >250 watts < 4kw
Electric motorcycle > 4kw

With regard to electric scooters, it is illegal to use privately owned ones on the road. Hired ones can be used in the areas where the government has allowed trials to take place but are limited to 15.5 mph.

There is a teenage girl who lives near me who rides an electric scooter on the road and regularly passes me when I'm doing 30 mph! It may be illegal, but it looks great fun! I did far worse things when I was a teenager. Those were the days.

Electric bicycles are classed as regular bicycles unless they can travel at more than 25kph (15.5mph), have a motor over 250 Watts of power or can be ridden on electric power without using the pedals. If it doesn't comply with any one of these, then it's a motorcycle.

Any or all?

Reminds me of the Fizzie/SS50 rules where they had to have pedals

If this legislation is bought in if caught will it be a fine and impounded of the vehicle

If it was maybe it should also cover tampering  with  electric bike and scooters too as they would pose a possible safety issue under this new legislation

Cambridge is full of electric scooters and they make my blood boil.
Only two days ago I nearly took one out with the truck when turning right at a junction. As I sat waiting for a gap in the traffic it pulled up on my left as if to go left. When I pulled away he pulled out at the same time but tried to out accelerate and cut in front of me. What made it worse it was dark and raining and his bright LED headlight was sticking up in the air blinding me mid corner. In typical cyclist fashion in Cambridge he was totally oblivious to what he did and how close he was to being flattened. I have also had them riding in the wrong direction and straight at me along Huntingdon rd on more than one occasion.
I'm not against them but they should be classed as mopeds and a CBT Should be mandatory.

Steve the fizzy not only had to have pedals but you had to be able to actually pedal it to make it move or it wasnt a moped.
Failed many a one on test because if it couldnt be pedalled it came under motorcycle rules
