Brake grease
« on: December 31, 2021, 06:30:58 PM »
What is a good grease for the rear brake drum pivot please. The stuff I've cleaned off was nice and sticky and what I have in my grease gun is just general purpose, clearly too runny for this job. I have searched the forum but to no avail. Google wasn't much better.

Red grease should be ok, it's high temp.

Thin smear of moly. grease or copper grease works a treat.

Copper grease isn't really a lubricating grease though, it's more of an anti seize grease for threads to stop galling etc.

Copper grease can dry out, but it won't melt or run at high temperatures, and we aren't talking about fast rotations, just loading.

I’m aware of that but unlike red grease it really doesn’t have much in the way of lubricating factors, in this case red grease is a better answer. Now the bolt holding the brake arm onto the pivot pin is perfect for copperslip.

Thanks guys, clearly a few opinions on this. As I have some copaslip, I'll probably use that. There are lots of different types of red grease, I have seen some advertised as "sticky". I also have some in the garage that IIRC I bought to lube some new fork seals in my mountain bike, it isn't really any thicker than the "standard" grease I have in my grease gun. The thickest grease I have is Lithium grease, used for the wheel bearings in the mountain bike.

To be honest in that situation it is not a high load area so anything that sticks, stays and stops corrosion is good
