CB750F1 engine oil capacity?
« on: April 11, 2010, 02:44:33 PM »
Just changed my F1 engine oil and oil filter today. With the engine hot I drained the oil tank, engine sump and oil filter housing.

Took just under 3 litres of oil to refill it to the top mark on the dip stick although the sticker on the oil tank states engine oil capacity 3.5 litres.

Have I missed something or is this normal?  :-\

Sounds pretty normal to me, I was astonished how much oil it takes to fill up the engine oil ways, oil pipes etc when I filled up with oil for the first time after the rebuild, it seemed to take loads of oil and take forever to fill. And then when I had run it for the first time the oil tank level had dropped dramatically. So re check it after running up the bike.
If your bike has been rebuilt the sticker on the tank may be a generic one, I know that the one on my tank is. Just checked in my handbook and it to states 3.5 litre.

Cheers

On my 750 with a dry engine i'd always soak the new oil filter in new engine oil then install it into the oil filter housing. Then, after filling the oil tank up to the upper mark on the dipstick, i'd kick the engine over several times just to get some of the new oil ciculated around the oil galleries. After a few kicks i'd turn the engine over with the electric starter with the kill switch turned to off until the oil pressure light went out. I would then check the oil level again to make sure that there was at least a half a tank showing on the dipstick before starting the engine. Once the engine had run for a short time i'd check the oil level & top it up until it was about 10mm below the upper level before restarting the engine again for a final check. I never ran the oil tank at its maximum level.

Yoshi,
why do you not run the engine with the oil at the max level on the dip stick?  :-\
