How long to register an old bike these days?
« on: February 11, 2022, 03:46:53 PM »
Just about to send all the stuff off to DVLA to register my 1980 CB650, just wondered how long it’s taking these days roughly?

Did my CB550 Feb 2018 and it took 8 days.

To be fair, though, they did spin round my age related 73 K2 import in 6 weeks, including vehicle inspection. I think that’s fairly good.

I sent my paperwork off on the 31 st January 2022 to change the taxation class to Historic, apply for a VEL - all forms sent with full V5 in my name, Insurance, V10, MoT exemption, plus a letter from  the Taxation Section/Team at Swansea who previously rejected my attempt to change the taxation class via the post office.

As of today it is still showing as untaxed - good job I am a few months away from wanting it on the road, still shown as untaxed even though it was declared SORN in June 2020 with previous V5 in my name. They issued a new V5 at Swansea after Post Office fail with letter for me to return it with a new V10 & Insurance Certificate.

Watch this space for progress..............zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Thought I'd better check mine, expecting to see it UNTAXED, (has been like that ever since I SORNED it) so was pleased to see it says TAXED. Took exemption form printed from DVLA site, plus V5 to post office about 4 weeks ago, got the Historic entry on a new V5 about 2 weeks ago. They were insistent at the post office that I had to tax it at the same time as declaring it to be historic, I thought these were 2 separate issues, however they were obviously correct in this case.

Yes, it automatically gets 12 months road tax (FOC) when you change its taxaction class to Historic. If its not insured though, you must SORN it to save getting the dreaded nasty letter and threat of a fine. Once you SORN it, its no longer Taxed, so you have to tax it on line again when you want to ride it and obviously insure it.

I did one last October at post office, V5 in my name, mot exempt form and insurance. Declared it historic and paid nothing but V5 saying motorcycle returned to me at the time.
New V5 saying historic arrived last week of JANUARY

OK so I will now SORN it again, need a drink now, what a minefield, thanks for the heads up Julie.

Kinda dreading doing mine when it's finally finished. No record of it on the system although I still have a V5 but not a V5C, the DVLA took 5 months to respond to my HGV license application and then said they were concerned about my liver so they had to send a questionnaire to my doctor, who was equally mystified by it, I don't drink but my condition affects my liver but it's got much better since I started the treatment 4 years ago. How your liver affects your ability to drive I'll never know. Personally I think my application fell down behind a cupboard and it was just an excuse for the delay.
