registering a frame without V5
« on: April 26, 2010, 03:22:38 PM »
I have seen a CB500/4 frame on ebay, frame number CB5002045862.  Is there any way to find out if it is pre '73 and what it's registration number is likely to be?  The DVLA said I would have to build the bike first, then register with local DVLA office, then apply for age related plate.

According to Honda, my bike, frame number cb500206....etc is Dec 1974.  Does anyone have 204ish?  I don't want to send the number off to Honda and spend

Could be 72 or 73 according to the data i have accumulated over the years. Only way to be sure is a dating letter from Honda (Cost about

I have:

1015xxx 4/72
2010xxx 6/72
2066xxx 3/76

If your 206 is Dec74, they obviously didn't make many as my 206 is Mar76 (note that is the reg date not the manufacture date...)

My reg date for the 206 is 1976 (uk original) but according to Honda, they made it in dec 74.

Incidenty, the engine number is 2106xxx which is from the USA.  I don't know whether it's older or newer.

The annoying thing is, years ago I had an earlier bike - before historic taxing was relevant but it had been used with a sidecar for many years.  Rightly or wrongly I suspected that it may have been distorted, plus it had ugly side car mounts welded on so I scrapped it in favour the frame from my parts bike - the '76.  I wish I hadn't now, but back in the early 90's there still seemed to be a reasonable amount of these bits around.

As my bike is a mixture of bits anyway I would quite like to get an earlier frame and rebuild it and have the bonus of free tax.

Thanks for the data Bryan, probably best to wait for one with a V5, then at least I know.

The only official way to get the registration number without a V5 or number plate is to build the bike etc as DVLA have explained.

The other way is if you know a friendly police person who would do a stoien vehicle check on the frame number. Part of the search result is the engine and reg number for that frame. This is now much harder as the reason for the search needs to be logged.

Cheers

I have a couple of early frames with number plates but no v5's, I'm hoping to hold onto the k plate one to do up myself ideally but have another that's early but not cirtain if it's quite early enough to be tax exempt, from what litte I can gather it's likely to be May '73 I think but as Brian says the only way to know for sure would be to get a dating certificate. Open to offers on it and can discuss details if you want to run checks on the numbers before deciding
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

Sounds interesting, it should be possible to find the registration date from the registration number, you should be able to look it up on the dvla website.

you are right, it is, but according to their own document, the DVLA assume anything first registered before 7th January 1973 must have been manufactured the year before and so eligible.

Indeed....it does, & if they get caught, they will almost certainly get the sack, if not prosecuted into the bargain.....so they need to be a very good friend !
Every check leaves a 'footprint' & there are teams of Data Protection staff looking for such activity.  Some of them don't even realise their liability, such is the calibre of internal communications, so probably best avoided nowadays.
