Pilot jet internal diameter
« on: May 10, 2010, 01:41:56 PM »
First post on here guys and it's a request for info on the size of the pilot jet internal bore on a 1978 F2 Phil Read Replica.
Trying to get the old girl going again after years of none use. During carb cleaning I have pulled the pressed in pilot jets out to check for restrictions. Looking at either end of the jet the bore seems to be of similar size, and I can get a pin into the jet from either end but not all the way through. At the point where the jet tapers down externally the pin will go no further. Am I correct in thinking that the internal bore reduces substantially towards the middle of the jet.  The only wire I can get through fully is a strand on copper wire that is almost hair like in diameter.

On the US site they insist that the number on the jet is the size in 100's of a mm BUT i cannot confirm that.

The 550 pilot jet needs 2 or 3 strands of electrical muliticore flex to clear the jet from memory.

There is one place in Canada or US that supplies the jets pattern, if i can find the link i will post it or go to www.sohc4.net and search pressed in pilot jets

Thanks for that info Bryan. Yes, can only get a single strand through all 4 jets. Double up and it's a no go.

Put your location in your profile and it will show up on your posts.

There are quite a few PRR owners on here - some may be close enough to lend a hand.

When it is back on the road - I can introduce you to Phil if you'd like the bike personally autographed.

For blocked or partially blocked pilot jets I use a strand from a Draper wire brush. I find that it's just the right size & this method has been used a number of times now, with good successes each time.

Thanks Yoshi.
Single strand of multiflex wire seemed to do the trick and the old girl fired up first time after the carbs were refitted. Had the vac gauges on the carbs yesterday and she now purrs like a good un.

A quick blip round the block indicated that the brakes bind and so this is tonights job. Strip them down and clean up the piston seal.

Have fun
Andy
