I used to squeeze a dab onto the end of my finger and then sort of dab and slide.

Yes, that’s my method too. Rightly or wrongly I tend to stay away from the inner edges. It seems to work as when I winched the cases shut just the slightest evidence of goo appeared at the joint. Not enough to overhang, bit is was perceptible. which was reassuring.
