« on: March 21, 2022, 06:29:53 PM »
Hey all

How to we feel about liquid casket like this? Shouldn't the gaskets in themselves be enough? Do you guys recommend this?

That’s for the crank case Half’s I think. I wouldn’t recommend it’s use with the correct gaskets.

Not for these engines, specific use (in product description) refers to water, ethylene glycol resistance used in water cooled engines.

Hondabond is used for crankcase half sealing specifically on this era motorcycle.

Mercdes Benz use a liquid only gasket on their sumps for the OM 642 diesel engines also fitted in a range of other vehicles such as Jeep, Chrysler etc.
Personally on an air cooled engine I would stick with Hondabond or similar. (eg Yamibond).

Car sump are a classically cheap non critical (for dimensions) gasket interface along with the old pressed steel rocker covers with minimal bolt fixtures.  No joints on these Honda engines are that type.

It has got amazing material performance, generally very very high heat tolerance too, but properly engineered joints with dowel location and usually needing no flexibility (most joints on these Honda engines) don't require flexibility or that quality in a sealant.

Several people says they use blue Hylomar for the crank case halves as well. It is readily available in my region. Can I use that instead?

Hylomar blue is the right product for a joint like this but obviously Honda chose their product to match their expectations (don't think Hylomar was available at the time of development) but it does split opinion on here as to which product to use.

Whatever,  and as Bryan says above, you have to use ABSOLUTELY the minimum coating on these surfaces to avoid the risk of having stray/excess floating around inside the engine.
Think about how a self sealing envelope sticky coating is thickness wise.

The surfaces are an "engineered" tolerance design that has to squeeze ALL excess sealant out as you tighten to give accurate location of the crankshaft bearings and how the clearance then works.  Only the smallest amount of sealing remains in the surface imperfections to avoid them leaking,  the remainder is touching metal to metal.

Sorry to bring agricultural products into this, but both Hondas I've rebuilt in recent years had the crankcase joints done with a thin coat of Harley-Davidson High-Performance Sealant, left over from rebuilding my blown up Sportster.

Um, appreciate the application has to be thin; but how to get that? Smear it with a finger, trowel the bulk off with a plastic blade….. ???

Oddly enough the thin film is easiest to obtain by squeezing some onto a suitable rubber gloved finger then smear it onto the casing - reload your finger when one it's depleted.

If you put it on the casing first then spread with a gloved finger it ends up thicker for some reason! (Tip from Nurse Julie)
