Where does this washer go in the clutch area?
« on: July 06, 2022, 04:58:11 PM »
Hey all

This washer was bagged with the clutch cover. I can't for the life of me figure out where it goes, and can't spot it in the parts manual. Can anyone recognise it?

I'm sure it's a shim 🤔🤔🤔🤔

There is a shim that from memory goes on before circlip, there is a measurement for max play in the manual

I already put in a very thin shim before the circlip and tested the play with a feeler gauge. All seems well.

Why shim and not washer? It’s rather thick I mean…

Already put in that shim. I packed it with the clutch cover actually, where I can't seem to find a place for it again. So I thought it was going into the clutch assembly as well. But it was completely dry and all the other items from that area was rather oily, so think I pulled it off from somewhere else in the clutch area. Will try and take it apart again and figure out what I missed. Don't seem to think I have packed it wrong. Really hope not. And followed the manual when putting together the other stuff, and haven't needed any shims there…

Honda sometime put an extra shim in somewhere to take up any excessive play. The extra shim will not be found on the fiché though as it wasn't always fitted. I'll have to ask Graham where the extra shim would have been put in.

It's not 15. Those are the packing shims, come in 0.1, 0.3 and 05mm so that's far too thick for them. I'm actually trying to make some of those shims as they are very rare and people don't seem to know the clutch basket should be shimmed out to remove excessive play. I always used to fit shims in before the circlip until the circlip would just fit. Engine was always quieter afterwards, the clutch basket moving back and too on the shaft would make noise which would go away when the clutch was pulled in.

I have the shims already, just need to trim them down to fit inside the basket. If that washer fits inside the basket where the shims would normally go it may have been an attempt to make a shim to remove play in the basket, if it doesn't fit then it's most likely meant for the clutch shaft somewhere.

I just went back out to the motor and tried. The shim doesn't fit on the shaft, so it is definitely not for the clutch basket. Which makes me think that I have bagged it wrongly when I took it apart. It's the last item from the bottom end, as everything else is assembled. Just measured it, and it is 30mm on the outside, 20mm in the inside and roughly 1mm thick.

Mmh… could it be the oil spring seat? No idea why I should have mixed that with the clutch though. But Im also kind of an idiot sometimes, so wouldn't hold it against me really…

Yeah, looks likely. Not very well machined but in that area it wouldn't really matter.
