speedo calibration

I'm looking for a 'vintage' style large speedo to change look of my project, but not sure about calibration. I can't imagine they're all geared the same, but I might be wrong and find it's a simple proposition to find another speedo at an autojumble and hope it'll work (I doubt it...  )

I can't believe it'll be anything like that simple, so has anyone else swapped speedos? Do people re-calibrate speedos? Is it worth it I wonder or shall I just re-use my old one?

I think they often have the ratio on them in small print, you just want one with the same numbers, your manual should also say the ratios, probably. You could just swap the cases and face to alter the look. I think specialists could recalibrate them for different bikes etc but I'd expect to pay

Or calibrate  it yourself using a satnav or an HGV with a CB radio (truck tachographs have to be accurate to 2kph over 30kph)

I have a speedo from some unknown bike fitted to my XR400 as it's nice & small & inconspicuous. It only goes up to 999 miles & i'm not sure of the accuracy, but as far as the law is concerned it has a speedo so's I can do a maximum of 25mph on green lanes...or thereabouts.
