Honda CB125S
« on: June 17, 2010, 01:26:49 AM »
In a recent copy of Classic Motorcycle Mechanics there was a blue & white CB125S...this is exactly the same as my very first bike that I had back in 1975, although it didn't look anything as good as the one in the magazine article.

I wonder where LMD 58K is now...it dosn't show up on the DVLA website, so it may well have been scrapped.

Think mine was a J plate. Excellent beginners tool. Thrashed and neglected - just kept going.

One day I'll have the time to restore it, not just talk and dream....

This isn't my 125 but it's so similar...except for the shock absorber shrouds. Used to do 13,000 per annum on that little bike...got through a crankshaft, two cylinders heads due to an oil blockage, & three girlfriends. But in those days it was cheap transport. The only time that my parents helped was my Dad (RiP) paid the

I was so cool.

I had an open face helmet and used to pick my girlfriend* up from her school and give her a lift home. No kit - just school uniform and a spare helmet  :o

I too rode various CB125S models.  Great bike, taught me how to rebuild engines.  On one occasion, a gearbox gear lost so many teeth it vibrated like the whole machine was going to blow itself apart, so, the night before my part one bike test, I had to strip and rebuild the thing.  I stayed up all night and had the thing going the next morning in time for my test, which I passed.  I can't do without sleep anymore.

Best road-bike I have ridden in the snow.  (CX500 worst)

That is so strange...I had the same thing happen to one of the gears on my 125. I still have that broken toothless gear in the shed...i'll get a piccy up. I also have a burnt out exhaust valve from all of those years ago. The timing had slipped & on the way home from Hastings in that very hot Summer of '76 it succumbed. The gear lever return spring went as well...I had to lift the lever slightly so's to be able to change down.

Yes, my 125s had done a huge number of miles, I think that poor little gearbox is under a lot of pressure.

My CB350k did a similar trick.  I changed the oil one day and one of the selector dogs off the back of a gear came out in the oil, oops!  It still worked and I rode it like that until the big end failed later that summer (1995).  The poor bike stayed in various sheds until I found another crankshaft earlier this year.  I stripped the engine, put the crank in, made all the gaskets, put it back together and after it's 15 year rest it fired up after about three kicks.  The only trouble is I refuse to spend money on it and I need some silencers before I can get an MOT so it's leaning against the back of the house waiting for the right bits to turn up.

These bits are all that remain of my little CB125S. As has been said in my previous post, the valve was what caused my loss of compression. I didn't realise the reason for the loss of power from the engine, & tried all sorts of ideas that could cause my situation. It wasn't until I dropped the engine out of the frame & whipped the head off to reveal the cause of the fault, but once again, I learnt quickly as this was my commuter bike from Navy College days circa. 1975.
The gearbox part was the final drive gear, so I lost all drive to the back wheel. I had another bottom end so I just swapped the left hand crankcase with the engine number on it from one to the other...sorted.

From what I remember my brother's future brother-in-law bought the bike from me back in 1978, replaced by the orange 550F1 that was my first big bike...but I will always remember my very first motorbike.

I still have my first bike, kh125 2 sroke that burns though pistions ever since a so called friend decided it would be funny to hide the bike so I thought it had ben nicked, all he managed was to drop it (was chained ) and put his hoof thru the oil feed pipe so the 2 stoke oil filled an outer engine casing rather than getting to the engine. The 'Friend' is long gone from my life, the bike remains though currently it's a non starter. But that and the 500/4 sidecar will forever stay.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock
