Standard coil wiring arrangement ?
« on: September 21, 2022, 06:47:40 PM »
I know it's cropped up before what is the standard layout for the coils & wiring as it does not appear to be handed in the wiring diagram.

Is the left coil usually for 1 & 4 cylinders using the yellow wire ?

Thus right coil is 2 & 3 cylinders using the blue wire ?

Left side is usually 1-4 Ted. As for wire colour, look at the points, whatever colour feeds the 1-4 points goes to the 1-4 coil.

I'd also advise turning the coils backwards so the leads come out of the rear, then route the leads over the top of the engine, there should be clips on the end breather cover bolts to hold them in place. The coils perform better backward, less chance of water getting forced into them by the wind so less chance of them arcing out.

You can see how I did it many moons ago.

Looks far tidier without the leads dangling across the front of the engine and no chance of a lead touching an exhaust and getting burnt through.

No, they fit fine afaik. It could be that you need to swap 1-4 to the other side but essentially if the leads reach from the left they’ll reach from the right, it may be that number 1 lead now goes to number 4 but due to the wasted spark system it doesn’t matter. The numerals just slide off the leads if it bothers you that they read wrong.

Straight HT caps on the inner cylinders and right angled on the outer cylinders. As per picture.

I checked the wire colour to the left hand CB points it's   Blue  -  coil for 1 & 4 is the Blue wire.
colour to the right hand CB points it's Yellow - coil for 2 & 3 is the Yellow wire.

I finally found the information in my workshop manual that confirms the above. New aftermarhet coils fitted purchased locally they are 90mm centres so I fitted a simple metal link to bridge the bracket gap at one end.  I will consider Ash's coil repair for the originals to be re-fitted later.

PO had fitted extra pair of condensers at the coils - not re-connected these as yet as I'll need to fit a quadruple female to the coils as was. As I'm just getting it running for a short road test I'll look at that when I do the re-build propper.

Just finished putting the tank back and some fuel back in the tank - engine started instantly after a spark plug clean, front & rear brakes all good to go.

Started raining here so road test weather permitting put back a day.
