550F jets
« on: September 23, 2022, 05:56:04 PM »
Hi all , trying to get my bike to run properly!! , however the idle is hanging slightly and I constantly  have to adjust the idle screw when I restart the bike .also my air box has fuel in it . I have checked the plugs and they are very black but not oily just sooty , also the main jets in there are 100 ,should they be 98 and would these cause too much fuel , its got a kerker exhaust on it so  not sure why the previous owner has put 100s in . Any help appreciated.

Can you see the carb number Dave, is it 069A or 627B?

They should be 98 main and 38 slow. I suspect the PO also altered the clip position which would account for the black plugs.

Most likely float stuck and flooding backwards. Check the pipes coming out of the float bowls aren't blocked/trapped. I'd also check the float bowl drain pipes, the brass ones, if those block the fuel has to go somewhere and it's either into the engine or the airbox. There should be a drain on the airbox as well to stop that getting a big problem.

Is the airfilter housing vented to air, in that the engine breather no longer goes to the airbox as it does as standard?

The engine breather ( big fat tube) at top of engine went to the bottom left of the airbox

Disconnect it Dave and just vent it to air near the main stand. If for any reason the engine starts to vomit out it's oil, and I've had this when a set of rings broke and the compression went past the piston and put the crankcase under compression, it won't flood the airbox.

NRP only have larger sizes but good to know , before I take you up on your offer Oddjob can I compensate the  jet size by moving the needle up or down a notch

My BIL ran his bike with 3 x 069a carbs with 98s in and 1 x 627B with a 100 in and never noticed the difference.

I swapped him a set of 627Bs for his and that's where these are from. I'll end up breaking them.

I doubt raising the needle would compensate, most likely it would make it worse.

It's possible someone may have just one spare.
