CB500 casings .... bit of a polish
« on: October 07, 2022, 08:57:06 PM »
So I picked up a spare set of casings for the bike with a view to polish them and swap them onto mine .... the existings ones are good but suffer from staining and corrosion.

Quickly realised I had neither the tools / knowledge to do them myself and when Julie suggested Briteworx (Harry) who was fairly close to me I took the plunge.

Dropped them off and had a good natter with Harry who didn't give a turnaround but said if he needed a change of scenery from some of the very intricate bits he was doing they may get to the top of the queue !!

Fast forward to today and I got the call they are ready and pictures to boot - got to say what a fantastic job - the cases provided weren't the greatest and have come up better than I could have possibly hoped for - the bike isn't a concourse example and never will be it is rather nice and these will only enhance it.

These are quick video links of the after polishing ..... not sure on quality as I'm not really social media savvy :)

Turned them round quick. Looks to be a good job.

Cost? I presume this wasn’t the £130 quote?

Fabulous finish and in all the nooks and crannies as well! If you intend to leave 'as is' I can recommend Microcrystalline wax.....

Nice bit of polishing you've had done Simon.

Thanks Ted - I almost went the route of getting a machine like you have but wasn't convinced of my abilities to use it :)

The Buffing Wheel is sat in my garage unused at present as I need to mount it probably on a pucka stand - plus I need to decide where it's going to be operating as they are messy I'm told.

Typical damage to the alt casing, I wonder though why he takes close up pictures of damage but not of the same area after he's polished it. I know how difficult it is to get rid of that type of damage so I'd be interested to see if he's got rid of it totally or just disguised it somehow.

He did warn that it may not all come out after measuring the casing thickness at that point - TBH the casings weren't the ones I purchased as I was careful to pick from the sellers best - shock horror I didn't receive the best

I pick them up Monday so can take any pics you want

Just thought I'd update this now I've collected the casings and actually managed to get them fitted .....

The pictures / videos were before they were packaged for me to collect - here is where it slightly goes down hill .... they were wrapped in the same oil covered bubble wrap as they arrived .... this then had put a bad layer of oil film on the clutch cover and even though I was assured it would just wipe off - it didn't and nothing I tried made it better.

So hence why it looks a lot less shiny than the other two covers below.

Some corrosion is still eveident (more so when I waxed them ) on the underside of the chain cover case - but this can't be seen easily.

Bottom line is - slightly disappointed that the hard work was somewhat compromised by reusing packaging but they are still 100% better than those that were fitted and better than I could have acheived

Simon
