Hi from Kinloss, in the North of Scotland
« on: November 01, 2022, 09:39:59 PM »
Hi all, just joined.

Bought myself a 1978 CB400F a few weeks ago, finally scratching a childhood itch from when I was a spotty youth in the very early 80's. It joins my ever-expanding collection, an original unmolested 1980 Honda XL500s, a fully restored 1981 XL185s (last year's restoration project) and a 1998 Triumph Thunderbird Sport 900.

The 400 ran rough on three, stripped and cleaned the carbs and re-balanced them, she now purrs nicely on all 4 but the no.4 needs to come apart again as it started to weep fuel through the overflow today - after being perfect for almost 2 weeks! Slowly working my way through a full end-to-end check-over and service, I've already trued up the back wheel, done an oil change, new plugs and HT caps, next task is to replace the rocker cover seal as it weeps when hot. I hope to run it next year whilst I rebuild a spare engine, then strip it this time next year and have the frame blasted and powdercoated, and probably repaint to Parakeet Yellow, as the current red is for an earlier F, not the F2.

The 400 is "XRH 302S" if anyone knows any history on it, it spent quite a few years around Central Scotland, two previous owners were in Larbert and Mid-Calder areas and another previous owner to that was down in the Hull area.

Cheers.

Surely that’d be a ‘98 900?
I guess they were pretty rare in the 80’s

Welcome by the way.

Hi and welcome to this wonderful forum from Orkney,
I think the Hull History Society have the registration records safely stored before DVLC came along - now DVLA.  They might be able to find the supplying dealer (Miles Kingsport or Hull Motorcycle centre) and possibly first owner.  You could also put a bit in Hull Daily Mail for info. Ash (Ashimoto) a regular contributor on here lives in the area - he might know something.

Nice collection of machines there - plenty of 400/4 owners on here - including me!

Ian

Thanks folks, I've also corrected the typo spotted by Steve D, the TBS is indeed a '98, not '88!

Welcome to the 400/4 forum😁. Lots of helpful people and knowledge on here .
If you paint your bike Parakeet yellow you will also get an extra 5mph out of it, yellow was the fastest colour😉.

Welcome from someone who lives in Kinloss Drive but in the south, old RAF site built on and all roads named after RAF bases
