CB750 K series tank design ???
« on: June 28, 2010, 10:28:53 AM »
Hi Guys

I am a serial restorer and have just aquired a 1974 cb750 K2 (apparently all UK bikes were designated K2 from 72 - 76 ?).

I beleive it to be a UK bike.

The tank has the black panel which i thought was correct for a 74 bike, however a gold 75 has just appeared on ebay with the black stripe above the honda badge (which i thought was K0 and K1 ?)

Does anyone know the definative info on the early 750 tank designs ???

Thanks guys

Steve

Hi Steve.

You are correct - we didn't get the K3-K5 here.

Here's a '72 K2...

Don't know about other years but why would they change it?

Never saw a gold CB750, I had a gold K1 (1971 K reg) and a gold K2 (1972 L reg), my mate had a later CB750 which was blue with the black centre panel on the tank, in fact a few of the guys had them. My CB750 was the Blue/greeny colour, which was the only colour that we saw in this part of the UK.
These are US models but interesting. http://www.sohc4.net/index.php?q=content/model-guide-2

Hi Guys

Thanks for the quick replys  :)

I actually prefer the earlier design, but i'm a bit of a purist, so she will be restored to correct standard.

So will have the black panel

Here is my project

She is just about all original, the front mudguard even has the holes for a front number plate  ;) can you still get them ??

I'm very near Sidcup and go to the VJMC meeting at the Gamecock pub (by Brands Hatch) 1st Thursday of the month.
Will be there next week, last month there were 2 K series 750's there  ;)

I'm sure i will need some help from you guys along the way

Thanks again

That tank has been re-painted, from memory only the K7 had a panel like that and that had striping round it

Hi Bryanj

Thanks for the reply, i thought the K2-K5 looked like these two 1974 examples

The Blue one being my bike ?

This is why i asked the question, there does seem to be some confusion  ??? ??? ???

From memory that style of paint job was only on US bikes and the stripes were never available seperately from Honda so however you look at it its still had a re-paint mate

OK Guys, i've been doing some more research today  :D

Firstly i decided to establish which model she is ...................... and she is a K2, distiguishing features being, left hand switch gear (and therefore loom), clocks and clock mount, cylinder head casting, chrome headlight shrouds, brake pedel etc etc

So, assuming still that she is actually a UK bike (oldstyle log book says first registered Sept 74), i guess her bodywork has been replaced with a US set ??

Research into K2 colours came up with 5 colours.

Candy Ruby Red
Brier Brown Met Custom
Flake Sunrise Orange
Candy Gold Custom
Planet Blue Met Custom

So, checking the colours out and seeing the logbook says Blue, i think i will restore her in the Planet Blue, just like this picture

Unless more research says its not right

I bought a K2 N-reg 1975 model in 1977 and it was exactly as the above picture for colour and graphics. The large black panel is either USA (not sure of year) or UK K6 as far as I've seen. Welcome to the site it seems to have some good discussions, I've just joined this month.

Hi Steve,
The K2 was delivered to the UK upto 1975. Your last photo/research is correct for your bike. The other photo (orange flake K3-K5 American model. Blue machine is a K6 UK model )
Let us know how you get on with the restoration

Thanks guys  :)

Next 'obvious' question is .............. where can i get the correct paint from ????

Judging by the name, its not a candy, but is a metalic ???

Probably wont start the restoration until winter (when i get 4 months off  ;)) but have already started collecting bits for her.
Will show you the progress when i start.

Thanks again

Lovely looking bike that Sfbrain, apart from the seat.  I've always fancied a 750.  Good luck with the restoration.
