These things are a challenge to common sense - yesterday I realised I had not fitted the steering column bottom outer race - it will be interesting to see if I can fit it working upside down or if I need to remove the rear wheel, swing arm, stand and fit it with the frame upside down as I did on the 400.

I'm assuming your centre stand is the one you took off not a spare stand.

Any news when the "Eagle will Land" (Laverda) ?

I don't envy you !

Yep - stand is the same  .... and eagle still hasn't landed  ::)

The bearing race is presently undergoing molecular cooling in our Freezer - I'm less than optimistic - if I can get it in straight flush to the frame I'm sorted - I have made a nifty tool from threaded bar & alloy drift tool discs to pull it into place.

If you're ever fitting a centre stand after having the frame powder coated for instance do it before you do anything else. With no swinging arm in place you can usually lift the stand up so much inside the frame that the spring will just clip on with no stretching at all, you just lower the stand and it's done, then fit the swinging arm after of course fitting the rear brake pivot pin beforehand.

The threaded bar method works just fine normally Ted.

Removed the new "genuine Honda" spring to measure and it seems it is 145mm end to end ..... which would probably be the issue

I've ordered again from classic honda ... another genuine Honda one so time will tell

Without a doubt. The attached on eBay looks about 5 1/16 inch. Might be worth asking them to check before they send it.

There's something wrong with that picture. The coils should be tight and without any gaps whatsoever. Either the spring is faulty and was supplied like that or the coins have opened the coils. I would always use a spring puller or lever it on using a long screwdriver. That way the whole spring shares the stretch rather that the coils when coins are used.

I think you are right - I've used the coin method before with no ill effects but have ordered a puller for the new one.

I can't remember how it looked when it arrived other than it not being in a sealed honda bag ....  I was more concerned skipping out to the garage to fit :)

You can have my  old spring f.o.c.  to fit in the meantime if it helps?

Yes UK eBay but FOC is better! Looks like the gaps don’t amount to the difference in length. I should think if the coins could stretch it, using it would too, (which it doesn’t of course). The genuine original ones are pretty robust. The DSS spring looks genuine as stated for anyone needing one.

Ted’s spring arrived and to say there is a difference is an understatement !!!

Coin trick used again as puller never arrived and no problems - fits perfectly and stand holds up against exhaust stop rubber

Result! Good news! 👍
Simon ps. Took mine for a spin today having only been out briefly since fitting Mark P’s ignition.
Seems to tickover cleaner when cold and warm, pull more eagerly and cleanly from low revs. Nice.  👍👍

Good to hear :) I put mine on after fiddling with various setup bits so wasn't sure of any perceived improvement  ::)
