exhausts ........... throw out or try to save??

Hello,  I took these to an exhaust specialist here in Notts to see if they could be rescued.  After 4 weeks the reply was NO.   So I picked them up and trudged off home.  I suspect they could not be bothered?  but I need another opinion.

There are two exhausts.  One better than the other.  Are they worth bothering with??

What are they off, if replacements are available I’d agree with them. They both appear to have split along a seam. Top one looks like it’s also slid down the road at some point.

And if you could it would be extortionate!
You’d have to sleeve them to get anywhere, even if you could find someone to do it which is doubtful.

I’ve just repaired a pair of silencers in very similar condition, I gave them back saying they’re done and will get you away but look for new ones as they won’t last.

These things rot from the inside out, so by the time the damage becomes apparant....it's got pretty bad.

Welding up that would only sort the outer skin, but inside it will still be a mess.

By the time you have someone cut them apart, fix any issues, weld back in good metal and re-plate the result, it would be cheaper to replace. I've been looking for an exhaust system for my F2 project that loos how I want, and I have seen so many rotten exhausts being sold for £100's when they should really have been scrapped.

They are off a KZ750 twin.  So, there are non to be had in the known universe.  It's very tempting to try and keep/repair the originals.

They look ok when on the bike.  But are not fit for purpose.  There is an alternative..... at a price.

I would like to keep them on the bike, BUT I do think that while they mostly look OK, I bet they are rotten inside.
I suppose we all dream of keeping the originality.  I agree that finding somebody to do the work is difficult.

They also have part of the left side as well.

   They could be made quite seviceable for years to come quite easily, just very time consuming. I have repaired far worse unfortunately I no longer
   have access to the equipment needed to do it.

Just a thought.

There is a stainless steel fabricators in Notts who make a lot of bespoke systems for old cars & bikes PD Gough in Notts near Ikea J28 M1 plus a competitor (former business partner) nearby at Huthwaite. My Merc system in SS was cheaper than the Merc part - they offered a variety of sound outputs from noisy V8 soundtrack to original !

I have seen a varity of vehicles being trailered to the premises for made to measure systems.

The previous owner of my Benelli 750/6 had a set of stainless exhausts fabricated in 2003. The cost then (agreed there were six of them) was over £3,000!

I took them off when Silentium manufactured a further batch of original pipes and was amazed at the weight of the stainless set. At 6' tall and 14 stones I could barely carry them.

Apparently the bike was trailered to Wales for the work, the company concerned measuring it all up on site before manufacturing the pipes. I understand that the bike was with them for some three weeks.

We have a very well known and respected exhaust system manufacturer locally and, when the pipes rusted through on my 350/4 I asked for a quote for a replacement in stainless (around 2015). He refused to offer a price, simply saying that I would never pay that much in any case!

I wish - no it was for a Merc R129 V8 done the same day Cat backwards - but no polished finish.
