Probably one of the springs on the change mechanism hidden behind the clutch or if the pedal is floppy the pedal return spring

I'd try rocking it back an forth with the engine switched off first and see if you can get it to come out.  Next step, take off the cover which goes over the clutch.  At least you can do this with the engine in the frame.  My 350 (same selector and clutch) got stuck in top once and I had to ride it home like that.  When I took the cover off I found that the selector bolt had become loose.  Put it back together and fine thereafter.

If I remember rightly, should you need to split the crankcases, it can be done leaving all the top end, i.e barrels, cylinder head, cam etc in place.

Took the clutch case to find the exploded kick start parts loose in the case, thank fully no damage and i was able to get neutral and then all the gears.

and then i lost everything but neutral and second  >:(

to get second i gave it a gentle tap on the selector shaft. but after that no more gears coming through

i believe this is right but could be wrong ( have been many times before!)

It can be hard to get all the gears to engage without the engine running, gears need to turn in order to align with the selector dogs.

Being a luddite, I blame electric starts.  If you had kicked it over to start it you would have been alerted to the problem earlier.  :)

Thank heavens it didn't go bang.

spin the clutch shaft and the wheel at the sametime as moving selector drum to try and get gears, with all that fell off there may be selector/gear damage

I've had the bottom crankcase off the engine on one of my 550s in the past, without having to remove the top end. It does seem a shame to have to remove the engine for this but it may well be the only way to be able to sort out the gear selectors.
