Another paint question
« on: December 08, 2022, 07:26:48 PM »
Has anyone had experiance in using the colour Planet Blue mettallic?
Does it require a basecoat/undercoat to bring out the finish?
Having never seen this colour except on pics on internet would appreciate some knowledge.

IMHO it depends what you are painting - generally you get a better finish with a suitable colour primer or undercoat.

Honda CB400 four super sport (first money pit)

I've used RS paints for supply of paint to the guy who sprays my paintwork including my Planet Blue 750k2 - excellent paint finish using the paint. Use their website for the paint you need including the base coat as a guide

Planet blue metallic is a straight metallic.
No candy.
So put on a ground coat - for instance grey.
Than simply spraypaint the planet blue metallic.
You can also use a spray can - aerosol for this.
Apply decal and clear.

This kind of info is what sets you aside from all other painters I have used Menno .. the willingness to share tech details and tips .. I phoned another painter I have probably spent £2.5k with over the years and he wouldn't even tell me the Ford white he used on one of my tanks.
I reckon you could make a half decent job of the PBlue metallic with RS Bikepaint aerosol and Spraymax 2k in a can clear. Not a cheap source of materials I know but I know it will yield good results.Aerosols have come on so much in the past ten years. I followed RS's instructions to lay the metallic on and flash off with a powerful hairdryer. Dont get their water based in an aerosol though as the paint splutter on a couple of cans I have had  and ruin what was destined to be a really good job. Ask for COB solvent based paint when you order.

I'm going to order my paint for the 350k0 over the next few weeks Ash. I'm going for Candy Red/White - did you ever find out what Ford White was used? (to same me paying RS Paints prices for a basic white!).

I bought some Ford Diamond white base-coat a few months back, as I have a hunch that's what he said he used (he had done someone else's CB350K0 paint-set  prior to doing mine). I am going to do a test panel later this week, as it happens. He did two sets of paintwork Candy red/white and Candy blue-green/white at the same time. One thing I did do, was get him to give me the remains of the tins of candy paints and metallic ground-coat he used on both paint sets. I can get you the colour references if you wish ..the paint was Max-Meyer (solvent based) and Ben Powell, a member here, who works with me, found a firm who sells that paint in  aerosols too.  My CB250K2 Candy Custom Gold/White paint set was painted by a different painter earlier this year and I will compare my test panel with that paint set as well.

That would be good thanks Ash (I assume the Max-Meyer is cheaper than RS and that the reason for using it?)
