This could be a good starting point (maybe). Nothing to do with me and I know nothing about it....

Cheers Matt, have seen this one but assume mismatch in frame and engine years will be issue with overall end "value"?

My nephew just reminded me there is a 550 that has been sat in his orchard for at least 10 years, you can have that cheap, but its probably a lazarus 2 project.
Oh and its only just north of gloucester

If it has a 71 frame, it should be a 500 K0 registered on a K or L reg in UK and even as an import it shouldn't look like that,(it looks like a USA back end) , 🤔. It's a bright enough bike but it all depends what you are going to do with it. If you want a bitsa, you're half way there.
Maybe ask the seller for the engine and VIN number so you can confirm exactly what's happened and what model it is meant to be.

But why is it fitted with the air filter snorkel that generally only appeared on the European bikes? The USA version never got that feature, I suspect it’s a German K1 with some K2 parts on it, mainly the front end.

Anyone notice the rubbers lying on the frame so that DS seat fits without rocking? That’s pretty bad.

Why does there appear to be a camshaft out of a twin cylinder in that cardboard divider box?

I thought that odd, could it be kickstart shaft? And a fair bit of frame has been hacked off the back top and bottom

You can clearly see the cam lobes and a worm drive on the end for timing purposes? Looks like a soho bike as there look to be 4 lobes.

Plus in the box near it are some rocker arms and they ain’t 550 arms.

The rocker cover isn’t 550 either, no pegs for the rocker shafts, looks to be a 500 one. Hard to tell what’s missing as a lot is hiding in bags etc

All I can add is NEVER buy a bike in boxes to restore unless you know the the seller / bike. I did this years ago and found out (to the detriment of my wallet) how hard it was to rebuild.

Yeah agree. With a built bike even in poor condition at least I can take good note of what needs to be done during the tear down.

I'm looking for a project bike I can rebuild to original state.that I intend to keep. Some stuff will inevitably have to be reproduction, etc.

Im a bit wary of the amount money I'll have to spend on replacement parts, especially the exhaust if needed so do want a balance of money invested Vs finished value.  I.e. don't want to spend twice the money the bike will be worth (already did that on the last build 😜) and I'm chalking that one up to learning experience.

Any 50 year old bike you will spend £££ on it. You will find it hard to get one that doesn't need engine work and a load of other parts. I try to buy a bike as cheap as possible with all the hard to find original parts as, i know it will need 4 to 6 grand spending on it, to get it to a very good original state  ;)

I agree, it's all those little brackets, linkages, etc that are so hard to find. Chose a bike that's ALL there in my opinion

I like a challenge, but that could be a step to far. Gotta be worth £500 though even just for parts.
