Hi all
« on: January 14, 2023, 06:06:37 PM »
Hi Guys,

Firstly to the Admins, thanks for accepting me to the site.

I’m based in Norwich, in my early 60s and been a biker since early teens, first riding in fields (mostly bantams and stripped down cubs) then on the road at 16. I was the odd one out that didn’t have a FS1-E or an AP50. Mine was a Malaguti Olympique, all 6.8hp. Then on to RD250s, 400/4s RD400, marriage, cars, kids - now returned to biking and building a small stable bikes that I always wanted. Started with a 1980 Z1000, then 77 GT380 and have now added a 77 CB750f1, which I’m in the process of improving. My everyday bike is a Tracer7.

Joined here to call in experience of other member and hopefully source a few bits n bobs.

Think that should do for now!

A great intro......and a very warm welcome from t'other end of GB.  I had friends in Taverham but they've buggered off to NZ!  Many happy times swimming in Cossy (Costessey) Mill many years ago and attended a few LJ Tech courses in Bowthorpe and used to eat at a place that had Octopus, Kangaroo and all manner of stuff on the menu - might have been the Kings Arms or Head??
Anyway, lots of good info on this excellent forum - hope you get the 750 improved to your liking.

Ian

Welcome. I had to look up the Malaguti Olympique as that was one that skipped my knowledge. What a great looking 50cc bike that is.

Hi Matt - thanks for the Welcome. The Malaguti was a great little thing - sounded great with a big Dellorto carb and filter  - nice induction waaarrp noise and then the twin pipes ringing on the over-run. Wasn’t as temperamental (or fast) as the Garelli Tiger my mate had. It always started first kick which the Garelli never did. Still always wanted an AP50 though!

Hi and welcome. Good knowledgeable crew here

All the ped talk go me googling the fastest in the 70's as below. Note there was no standard SS50 but one was there with a bigger motor.

Really like I remembered things. European stuff fastest but poor build  etc.

One day I'll have the time to restore it, not just talk and dream....

Mate of mine had a Garelli Record, fast little bugger it was, the rest had Puch VS50. I never had a moped as I was riding proper bikes at 16, the last year you could do so (1971) before they upped the age to 17.

I had a Fantic Super T. Broke rings and holed pistons regularly. The electrics were very poor and it cracked the expansion chamber and rear mudguard bracket regularly. Wish I’d chosen a FS1E. The AP50 was a chunkier affair and didn’t appeal to me at all.

ALL, the italian mopeds had electrical problems and yes the Fs1e was the most popular but the AP 50 seemed better built and faster.
