   I received a Aldi Ferrex compressor on Friday purely for doing tyres and I must say for £18 first impressions are very good If you were to add a small tank it
   would make it very versatile.

Just a tip based on my experience with three similar compressors over the last 20 years  - don't carry this sort of device in your car for years as the screws shake out & they fall to bits.

You never know with their items, some are really good with others not matching expectations. Suck it and see really.

In the same vein, I bought and use original VW group "boot" fix pumps from t'bay that are sent out with VAG cars having no spare wheel.

One I've got at 19 yrs old from 2003 manufacture car that's been used for literally everything.  Quite small, bit noisy but very effective.  The Blue one's are the best, early issue with brass pump head and long life, often been deployed at mtb gathering for bike tyres (hence effective testing) no problem with car tyre from flat if on rim ok too. Varied price depending on what you can grab, but usually 24~40 quid ish 

Oh, can easily be carried in a rucksack for bike emergency.

   Why would you carry it in your car it's 240v 1100w  At least look at the thing before condemning it,  I've just done my van tyres at over 4bar, car tyres and all the
   bike tyres without any probs. Sub £20 3years warranty what do you want.

Talking of compressors, anyone recommend a small inexpensive one for the workshop? There are so many out there I never know which one to get and have heard some right disaster stories concerning some of the better makes. I only need a small 25-50l one to blow crap about and clean stuff, no power tools to be used off it, no spraying, nothing like that.

Any reccomendations?

Just talking about the 'LIDL IDLE' or similar from Aldi, they do vary in quality. I have the laser temp guage which was 15 quid and a few grinders which were sub 20 quid but I bought a 6KVA petrol generator from Aldi about 11 years ago, a Parkside one I think.  Honda copy but has no missed a beat at all and never fails. Its been run over by dumpers, reversed into the lot. Think it was about £175ish.............best tool Ive ever bought for the money!

Yes I did initially not realize it would not work from a 12 v source - I thought it might work off both. I would probably carry such an item in the boot of my Jeep for convenience.
I have an outdoor socket at the front of the house so considered buying one as the price is attractive -  the list of 1 star reviews even discounting folk who thought it would operate an air tool was pretty pretty scathing.  I have learnt that 3 year warranties online are often  worthless again there seem to be issues with how Aldi fulfills the warranty - it would be nice if you could do instore returns.

I hope members here find they live up to their expectations or get a good one - time will tell. On the flipside I would never buy anytning if I took too much notice of poor reviews as they are often so subjective.

I've got a power transformer in the van for powering the microwave an kettle on site so doesn't matter to me much thats where it'll live.

Roo, these are quite a good little unit https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115670171818 as they are heavily built and usually quiet.

Junair or Bambi compressors are similarly designed, last well and have secondhand stock usually available.

Used in v-quiet environment usually,  generally high spec and long lasting. That link has a couple of useful accessories too included.
