Cases oem finish
« on: April 28, 2023, 02:38:54 PM »
Hello all question for the purists , how were the gen cover, starter motor, clutch cover cases finished ?, wanting to relocate the factory finish , would cerakote be a modern day equivalent, thanks for your answers

In short, no, cerakote whilst very good isn't a perfect match. I've actually got a piece that's been ceramic coated in ALU code paint in front of me right now, the finish isn't smooth like the original finish was. It's not as bright either. The cases were sprayed a bright silver and then lacquered, it's believed that back in the day the colour 5 wheel silver was either a good or very close match, it's still available AFAIK.

There is a thread of mine called ceramic coating and on page one is the part I'm looking at right now, a carb bracket.

If you go the spraying way don't forget to use petrol resistant lacquer.

Well I like the idea of cerakote on the barrels and crankcases , vapour blasting looks nice but it still will go all furry in time, where the crankcases and covers all the same shade of silver ?

No the crankcase is a flat type of silver and was not lacquered, just left as it was sprayed.

Cerakote is fine for the crankcases as is the way I'm going myself.

If its a 400/4, the top crank case was painted, the bottom crank case wasn't painted. The barrels weren't painted but I can't remember if the head and/ or rocker cover were painted or not 🤔🤔🤔.
Simoniz SIMVHT31D is the best paint we have found personally.

You need this:- For crankcases and covers. (check out the sister USA sohc4.net site)

https://www.radwell.co.uk/en-GB/Buy/DUPLI%20COLOR/DUPLI%20COLOR/DE1615/

But last time I imported some from there it cost me £25/can landed after shipping and customs.

Can you post some pictures of the finish please? Is this a good original match for the alternator, chain and clutch cases?

VHT and Duplicolor is the same paint, made by the same company in the USA. And is OK for water cooled engines that only get up to a maximum of 280c.
Simoniz SIMVHT31D is 800c and is much better for air cooled engines which run at a higher temperature than water cooled.
Edit..... I should have said that the outcome all depends on the prep, regardless of which paint is used.

Good point Julie about the temperature range.

The word Ceramic Resin sways you away from the lower temperature threshold of the Dupli Colour product.

I have to disagree. Simoniz SIMVHT31D is a perfect match to OEM finish. It also lasts very well and is really easy to keep clean. We've painted 100's of engine cases and they all look fantastic. But yes, horses for courses, as you say. I used the Duplicolor on the head of one of my own engines as a trial for a customer and it was pretty rubbish, it finished up a more bronze colour and is already blistering after 5 years.

I wanted my frame powder coating in  Nut Brown  so I haven't a clue about shades of silver.  8) 8) 8)

I was you will probably know talked out of Nut Brown so ended with boring black - my only input was I went for a Matt finish frame.  ;D ;D ;D

The Dupli Color paint clearly says ok up to 500c.

Most engines can't go beyond 250F without risk of major damage, talking external temps, not internal temps, pistons for example run much hotter than 250F
