400f front mudguard
« on: May 01, 2023, 04:28:32 PM »
Hi all, anyone got any spare, slightly knackered front mudguards? Just the guard not the stay,?

The one I’ve just started working appears to be badly holed under a raft of crap repairs.

Not a biggie, just don’t want to order a new one to then cut it up. I only need about 9” from the front of the brace and about 9” back.
It’ll get nannied and prepped for paint so not bothered if it’s a bit dinged and beaten up, if it’s summut near, yes please.

That would be fantastic, ‘summut like that in the shot enclosed. That’s  the best bit I  have but holed
due to rust again. The other one has gone to the great scrap bin in the sky. This one’s straight but goosed. If you have that would’ve splendid.

A while back an inexpensive  front mudguard was posted on sohc by either Bryan or Ken. If you have an old  400 fork bridge you could attach it. I think it was SS ot Alloy it was cheap around £20 ,new
Honda CB500 K1 (new pit dug out ready)
Honda CB400 four super sport (first money pit)

The fork brace is currently being welded up after having 20mm take out of it to lower it closer to the tyre so yeah it’s just the guard I’m after…….

I posted a pic of a standard 500 mudguard brace fitted to the blade off a CB900FZ Roo. The blade is GPS plastic.

You’ve lost me Ken, this is for The Doris’s 400.
I’ve modified the brace just need a suitable guard and don’t want to cut up a decent one. It appears that after looking everywhere they all rot in the same place and I think I’m hoping, just thought I’d ask.

Ploughing through model books and the t’interweave at the min looking but it’s a bit bleak……being fussy obvs

Here's a pic of my 500 when it was being restored, early 80s IIRC, the front guard is a mixture of 500 and 900. The brace is the original one from the 500 but like you I was finding they tended to rust in the middle of the brace, I think mud etc got under the brace, then water got into the mud and essentially made a mud pack, this held moisture far longer than just water would and meant it rotted the blade from underneath. So I cut off the chrome blade and looked around for a substitute, as I was still in the trade back then I took a front mudguard off a CB900FZ under insurance, drilled the rivets out and cut down the side plates so it left the same shape as the 500 chrome blade, bolted it to the 500 brace and no more rust. I had the blade painted to match the tank and side panels and it looked real nice.

I chose the 900 because it had a 19" front wheel so it was the right curvature. You'd need one with an 18" front wheel if you were thinking of doing something similar.

The only thing wrong with the 900 blade was that it had the speedo cable hole on the wrong side of the guard.
