Can you identify this wheel
« on: May 19, 2023, 11:08:05 AM »
Sold to me as a 500 four rear, but looks too "chunky". The hub measures up the same and spoke length looks right but the spokes are much thicker than the ones I just got from DS.
The spoke pimples (?) on the rim are much more pronounced than Ive seen before. tyre size is 120/18 and rim is marked 18-2.15. I like the look of it and it will suit the kind of build Im doing, but will it fit. [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

That looks like a 500/550 hub alright but probably been re built at some time as rim is wider than stock, should be 1.85? spokes do look thicker than stock, the original ones on Lazarus were much thinner, even Central wheel services sent the wrong ones. I reckon it will fit ok if thats the look you want.
Love the 500 and 550 have a 500 called Lazarus under restoration

My 500 rear wheel was fitted with 18x2.15 rims at the rear with 40 spoke hub IIRC. Tyre was 3.50x18 .

Having an orange outer seal they look like aftermarket bearings.

NTN bearing and i have seen orange seals so probably original, did you get the brake plate and there should be a max diameter inside the drum

Interesting Bryan the ones in my 500 hub were Black the replacements are Orange - might be brand related colours.

The CB750 uses a 2.15 rim whereas the 500 just got a 185 rim, so someone clearly has reshod the existing hub with a wider rim, most likely to use larger section tyres, I did exactly the same but used Lester wheels to get the same result. Probably thicker spokes because the wider rim needed more strength from them and the holes in the rim are larger. That's a good find, well worth keeping as it is and matching it with a 2.15 front rim would make it even better. You can use 4.10 front tyres then and 4.25/85 rears as I did back in the day.

Standard bearings were orange faced like those, so those are original.

Yes got the brake plate but cant find a reference to max diameter, probably under layers of crap.
Im off to France tomorrow so will get to it when I get back.
