Painting Cylinder Blocks - best methods?

My recently rebored cylinder block has been cleaned up externally with Petrol then thinners with some wire brushing to remove loose paint etc.

I think I gave it a coat of spray paint a few moths ago honestly can't remember - clearly not properly as when the block is inverted the fins do not look as though any fresh paint has reached them.

My first thought was it might be best to use a small brush and hand paint all the fins on both sides before applying a spray finish - obviously hard to spray far enough inside without applying too much paint to the outer edges.

Not going to go down the Ceracoat type route  - any painting tips welcome.

I have Simoniz paint that but it does not really want to spray inside the fins very well - might be holding the can too far away - I might just spray some into the cap then brush it in first.

Ted, I'm not sure you could do this but there are some nozzles on spray cans that seem to be a little more professional and will spray in a fan and thus you may get in between the fins. The end of the nozzle can turn and so you can spray horizontally of vertically relative to the orientation of the can. I wonder if you could fit this nozzle to the Simoniz can?

As an aside, I knew the bloke who invented the Monofil system.....

Never had a problem spraying the fins in silver or black

Just to help me at a later stage with my next project, how many cans of the silver paint would I need to buy to spray the complete engine, obviously it will all be separate parts not a single lump!

I used three on my 400 with quite a bit left over in the almost empty cans that when they started to splutter I used for brushing some bits as required.

My advice ... get yourself some Duplicolor DE1615 with ceramic  .. that's what all of the guys and me on the US site use. Very close to original Honda shade. Hard to get hold of but worth the effort IMHO

That is only because they can't buy Simoniz in the USA.

I reckon it must be really difficult to see the underside of the fins when the engine is  mounted. Maybe That’s why spraying the block sitting horizontally is what people settle for since the main function if the paint us cosmetic.
