Primary drive chain backlash/play
« on: July 24, 2010, 08:57:05 PM »
Well at last I am getting on with the rebuild.

I have today taken the clutch assembly off and noticed that when I turn the primary drive shaft there seems to be a lot of backlash/play in the primary drive chain.

Is there a tensioner on the chain somewhere or do I possibly just need to get a new chain?

There's no tensioner on the primary chain; if you're taking everything apart it's worth changing it although they're a bit pricey (

The primary can wear through both the oil gallery from pump to filter AND the main cross gallery so if you have plans to split the cases always fit a new one

It's a Hy-vo multi link chain & i've heard of engines with 80,000+ miles on them with no noise from the bottom end. The chain can sound as though it's flapping around if the carbs are out of synch.
