Cutoff denim jacket and patches
« on: July 28, 2023, 05:01:07 PM »
I found my old cutoff in the wardrobe the other day, had badges on there that would be rare now, stuff long gone, like an Ogri badge or a Bike magazine badge, plus old club membership badges etc. A lot of these were either sew on or iron on. The sew on ones still look great, not so much the iron on ones. My favourite bike has always been the 500-4 and there are 4 iron badges from the 70s depicting this bike, they say something like Honda 500 four, they were made of felt with printed letters IIRC, when the jacket got washed the felt contracted and distorted the badge, the edge lifted and you could see the glue underneath still attached to the denim, not a great look.

The cutoff doesn't fit me anymore, ok just by itself but still tight around the shoulders but over a leather jacket it's a no go. So I've decided to buy another cutoff and transfer all my old badges, those that can be transferred that is, the 500 ones won't make it and for some reason that kinda upset me. So I decided to see if they were still available to buy and no they are not. Bummer.

With that in mind I looked around and frankly the badges that are around are pretty bad. So I thought of having some made, properly made, sew on, with proper background not felt, proper embroidery etc. The question was what design should I go for, same as the old one or something else. I decided to go for the side panel badge, it's sort of unique, got colour in there and anyone seeing it knows what bike you like or own. So I send a pic of the badge to a specialist firm and they are going to do a mock up of how the badge will look. I struggled with the background colour TBH, the edge of the badge is black so I thought black background would be out, not enough contrast. However after discussing it with the firm they say the background would be black twill, the edge of the badge in black embroidery and then the rest in chrome and orange like the badge itself. May go for the edges of the badge in gold. They'll be 150 x 50mm so not huge but approx the same size as the badge.

It's the cost of them that concerns me however, minimum order is for 10 but if you increase it to 25 the cost halves per badge and for 50 it's a quarter of the cost.

So I thought I'd see if anyone would be interested in buying these badges when they are made, I'll buy them anyway, I'm not relying on uptake here, I can put any excess on Ebay I suppose.

So, any thoughts? except of course how sad I am for thinking of wearing my cutoff again, you don't need to say it, I know. I'm reliving my youth and I make no apologies for doing that. Roo, shut up before you say anything.

Not sad at all mate, if you went to the TT all the bike supporters pubs had beermats with different drawings to add a caption too to get a prize, i won a pair of Goldtop boots but had to sell them as me legs was too fat.
Anoying thing was they didnt tell you which caption you won with!!

Not yet John, I have to accept the quote first and then they'll do a couple of digital designs, I choose the one I want and they make them. Just imagine a side panel badge mounted on a small piece of cloth and you should be close.

To accept the quote I have to decide what amount to order, hence why I was seeing if they'd be any interest. Might just take a chance and order 50 and sell the ones I don't use.

Unfortunately I will have to pass on this one Ken. I still have my old bodywarmer (remember them, Barry Sheene used to wear one over his race leathers) that I used to wear to Wimbledon Speedway back in the 80’s, it is full of the metal badges I used to buy at the time including the ‘Happiness is 40-38’ classic :D

How about a "sohc members" badge with crossed swords for dueling between Centurions with a Latin motto underneath  "Kynus v Gyrhus" os something phonetically similar. Or our site moderator as Umpire Independus.😁😁😁

Any nomenclature similarity between living people or members is completely coincidental.

I've ordered 50, the background will be a dark grey as I thought it would make the badge part stand out better.

Once I have some concept pics I'll post them, cost if you're interested will be around £6-8 depending on whether I go with metallic thread on parts of the badge.

Just got the artwork through from the manufacturers.

Don't forget, these are just 2D digital images, the real badges are fully embroidered so the side panel badge part will stand away from the backing twill or cloth.

This is the way it looks now. The background is this material. Just so you can get a visual of the finished badge. I thought black would be better at first but then the edge of the badge gets lost with black on black etc and I wanted a colour that wouldn't show dirt that badly.

The gold border is this thread.

The chrome lettering is done is metallic thread.

The orange F part in this thread.

And these are the final images for me to chose between.

I asked them to change the odd bits on the border, the little pinched bit on the 5 and the outline of the F to reflect what the actual badge looks like, it's surrounded by a raised chrome border. This arrived this morning.

I now have to chose which version looks the best. Hence why I'm posting. The bottom pic is closer to the actual badge but the top pic has the F part better defined.

What do you think?

Not a bad idea Ted, we could maybe think about a SOHC members badge, maybe in cloth and metal. It's just the artwork that may be a bone of contention.

Suggestions anyone? We clearly can't have one for each model but maybe we could have the most common, 400, 500, 550 and 750.

I would definitely buy a 400four badge in the side panel font, maybe a SOHC one as well. Great idea. 👍

If these go well I'll think about doing a 400 four one as well.

Gold lettering? on what colour background though, black might be nice. Good contrast. Or maybe so many red, blue and yellow?
