Do I have the wrong cable

There's way to much slack for the adjusters to cope with.

Looks like you've got the longer type USA cable for the higher bars Gary. Is the top end routed correctly?

Is that a 500 cable you are using?

Might be worth checking the uncovered cable length to compare.
Unless the US version has a different lever I would expect the extra length to just leave a loop of spare cable.

Can you move the lower bracket higher or is that fixed?

Looks more like a cb750 K cable  ;) You will need a 550 cable as you have a 550 cover  ;)

I could well be wrong but I thought a slight difference in overall length wouldn't matter. as its the free inner cable length that is important.
On this cable it is 5.5 inches which is quite a bit to much for the adjusters to cope with.
I also thought 500 and 550 cables were the same.

Bracket is fixed.

Not routed as just a trial to see if the 550 conversion is working out.

I was told its a 500 cable, then again I was told a lot of things that turned out to be "inaccurate" :o

500 cable has a cover over the adjuster bolt, 550 doesn't.
