That doesn't look good. Do you have the piece of foam between the strainer and filter housing...
Does make you wonder if it might be easier to vent directly to atmosphere.
If that is oil staining, it shows that you have a problem from the vent system

Out of interest what is the condition of the inside of your vent pipe itself not just the long section but the drain section as well, it might look good on the outside, it could be well deteriorated internally.

I did look down the air vent tube yes, unblocked and looking ok to me, it is after all only 5 years and about 11,000 miles old. The bottom of the air box, and drain below were messy but unblocked. I'll do what you said when I do the valve clearances, I've also got the carbs off for converting to the Viton O-rings I got off Julie. If things don't improve maybe the top end rebuild I have in mind led by the need for a new cylinder base gasket might show something up.
Is the air box foam pad oily ?
