What age?
« on: August 20, 2023, 08:50:31 AM »
Hi everyone, first post! This bike, cb650, has been in my family since I was at least 4 years old and now finally I have gone from the small child pillion passenger to being the 40 year old rider who passed his test two weeks ago. Having emigrated with the bike from the Netherlands in 1993 the dvla have the bike registered in 2007 as a 1981 model although the chassis is RC03e2005360 which at a google guess shows it as being 1979. Is 1979 correct and was the import registration flawed or is it in fact a 1981 bike? The DVLA and I would both like the V5 to be accurate and the plate to be from the year of manufacture hence the question

In my experience it is not unusual for a vehicles manufacturing date to differ by be as much as two years from the date of first registration due to being unsold new stock during that period.

I am not sure from the brief details you have given what country it was first registered in if it was the Netherlands then when imported to the UK DVLA would use the data from the foreign registration document.

Thanks for reply - yes that's possible although in the early 80s my father was already the 2nd owner. Yes the bike was first sold in The Netherlands. Going by the date of chassis/engine numbers the internet shows a 1979 manufacture which in speaking to the dvla is the year they want on an amended v5. I just don't want to get the dates wrong or trust google......LOL

My only observation is that the frame number listings appear to show references to UK market magazines so presumably UK models.
The Netherlands may have had different versions but on the face of it I agree with your dating as it being a 1979 model. I have read somewhere that DVLA often add a year to dates. Looking at some of the details like the chrome trim  to the airbox etc how does that compare with yours?

I thought the earliest ones/ 1979 -  had single disc/ wire wheels. But would need to dig around online a bit to check if that's the case.

The link says black Comstar wheels, the bike in the picture has silver ones.

Glad you got here, i would go the VJMC letter route for dating, DVLA seem to accept those as being accurate but be prepared as they may want to visit and physically check the numbers and want a complete bike

Yep here it is

http://www.sohc4.com/cb550/cb650/

 :D

The information is a USA link and will be for USA CB650's only and not the rest of the world.
If you look up CB750 K2 it will say that it was only sold in 1972. Yes, in the USA but, the rest of the world the CB750K2 was sold from 1972 to 1975  ;)

Hi and welcome to the forum😁  Those numbers on that site are for USA bikes I believe. My 1979 Canadian model CB650 untill July this year was registered on the V5 as manufactured 1984.DVLA told me that they would only take information on date of manufacture from the manufacturer and would not recognise any club dating services although I believe that is not so but you know what DVLA are like😂.I sent clear photographs of the frame and engine numbers to Honda U.K. and within a week for £35 sent me a dating letter which DVLA accepted and issued me a new V5. My bike doesn’t have a VIN plate but wasn’t a problem Google Honda U.K. vehicle year of manufacture service. Good luck  and nice bike it should have twin discs and I reckon those Comstars are correct for an early 650 I think later ones had reverse black Comstars
Honda CB650Z
Honda F6C Valkyrie

He has stated that the bike is from the Netherlands so, Honda UK will not have any info on it  ;)
