the price of old bikes today..
« on: August 03, 2010, 09:24:33 PM »
It's not quite an SOHC...but the right era.   Is this price for real? ...and is there any chance that my CB400/550/650 hybrid will ever achieve this......!

Tidy bike, but a lot of money. Original condition with low mileage (any proof??).

Not an investment at that price.  ;)

These old things are only worth what someone will pay and looking at the prices achieved on Ebay for bikes that need restoration I do get very surprised especially at the cost of the restoration work. These old fours can really eat into a budget and I am not convinced that it can be regained at the selling stage.

For example my K1. I have receipts in excess of

13 grand is waaayyyy too much  :o

I'd have thought nearer 4 - 5 depending on originality.

Then there's 18mpg to contend with too.

A bit like the K0 on ebay, it has been advertised for about half a year now, it is a great looking bike but 12k is alot of money and it sure ain't an investment

13k for a bike that 1 dosent handle at all, very low mpg and as i would expect hard to find any parts for  if they stick to that price they looking for the preverable  but as they say always one round the corner  but i for one would not pay anything like that.

bikes sell for more than their value because speculative buyers hope the item will increase in value, much like the Antiques markett or arts etc. The value becomes totally false. Same story in classic cars. The only buyers become collectors/ speculators at that end of the markett. In point of fact I think by the time value moves higher than 5k then the bikes probaly start to have more than a bit in common with sculptures than working machines.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

This is all 'cos some poncy prat went on TV at the beginning of the year suggesting that, rather than leave their hard earned savings in bank accounts, people might consider buying amongst other things, a classic car or bike. What he really meant was some Brough Superior or Velocette with celebrity background or previous ownership. But as usual all the papers and bike mags went OTT and exaggerated the advice. Now of course the prices of quite ordinary bikes are growing exponentially.
That means for the likes of us, when we come to sell our winter resto project, the sky's the limit. But when we're scrounging around for a new project for the coming winter, it's a totally different story.

Perhaps now is a good time to put my 500 on ebay and see what happens, what do you reckon, 'Barn Find', easy restoration project?
 :)

don't forget to add the ubiquitous "thousands already spent on new parts, too many to list".

That one cracks me up every time I read it.
