Delkevic Exhaust pipe
« on: September 29, 2023, 03:44:17 PM »
Hi,

Looking at the Delkevic four into one stainless steel exhaust pipe. There are some springs between the downpipes and the silencer which I am wondering what they are for and whether they could be removed?

thanks,

I suspect they hold the silencer in place & allow for expansion - plus they might be related to noise resonance?

Fairly common with rigidly mounted exhaust system (both car and bike) to have the header pipes entering with a "slip" joint to avoid cracking, while being retained by a spring, or pair per pipe. Should only work with them fitted.

Just a type of design, often seen on race pipes.

Same system holding my Akrapovic together on my 1300, much prefer it to the welded type TBH, it comes part easily and makes for really easy cleaning. Plus if you ever want to get another surface finish on it it makes that easier and cheaper to do as well.

One thing I would advise though, buy a spring puller, makes the job much easier.

Cynical me says that this is just “marketing”.

OK for MotoGP and therefore a “must have” for any self-respecting modern biker.

My Tiger 660 doesn’t have one. Should I be upset?

Delkevic exhausts should come with a spring puller in the kit  ;)

No, I love mine Steve. I can take it off without disturbing the exhaust gaskets as the clamps stay on the cylinder head, I can then clean the downpipes, which I then polish on my polishing machine, can't do that with a one piece. I can do the 2 Y splitters, the downpipes and the link pipe all the same way. I use Harpic 10 to remove the staining as well. It's not a gimmick believe me.

Harpic 10 is that a pseudonym for some sort of specialist exhaust cleaner.

Harpic has 10% Hydrochloric acid as active ingredient from my understanding of it.

Don't think you'd want it on chrome, but stainless system obviously different inntgat respect.

I think it's not Hydrochloric acid but its alkaline - sodium Hypochlorite (bleach active ingredient)- nasty stuff iirc - as a kid I mixed some Harpic with another cleaning solution forming Chlorine Gas in the bathroom! My dad went balistic.

Update: You are right Harpic contains HCl its Domestos I'm thinking of - totally different.

The msds info says hydrochloric acid, guessing that's what removes the limescale in their product claims Ted. I used to mix weak acid mix to descale the wash trays in b&w darkroom process facility at work.

Yep, you have to be very careful with those cleaning products to not get unintentional "output" don't you  :)

Someone locally had apparently mixed two bathroom cleaning product then lit a fag in the bathroom, blew the shite out of his house, literally.  A mid terrace cottage, it blew both front and back walls out almost entirely, quite comical for us not immediately neighbouring to see the roof above just a gap with the entire contents strewn across the front and back gardens. Seriously potent stuff for such innocent looking materials.

I use Harpic 10 on my stainless exhaust, it's good for removing the staining. It's also cheap. Not for chrome I might add.
