Will someone go for this? - it's the very rare 'one off' with a 5 speed box  I thought this guy was an expert!

That's strange Matt,
Using the ebay number 325623643525, gives a different page from the one if you cut and paste from the url.  The numbered version states 5 speed manual, whereas the url version doesn't show it.
I realise FTFF knows his stuff, so it's just a typo but I thought I'd share it with the collective, mainly for the price and condition.

Edit... Along with the recessed fuel filler cap under a flap.

Then why's it got a normal flip up tank cap? AFAIK they didn't do the recessed tank until the tank with the stripes, all the ones I've seen have the stripes, can't remember seeing one with the flap and a solid colour tank.

No idea, maybe the tank has been changed but they definitely came with the flap at one stage in 1975 for that market.

As Graham is so often saying the parts book can be wrong, plus the diagram shows the tank with the stripes.

I've looked at Honda brochures from the time they were out and I can't find a single one with the flap and solid paint, only ones with stripes. You'd think if it was available at the time there'd be a brochure somewhere showing it.

The American SOHC does say in it's history that the recessed tank cap came out when the stripes appeared.

"The F2 model started with frame number 1073400 and was offered in two new colors, candy Antares red or Parakeet yellow with a silver “Honda” logo. A stripe was added to the tank and the the sidecover logo font was changed from the previous model. In the US market, the side covers were black like the F1 model. The tank was restyled with a slightly recessed locking filler cap."

The parts book is correct on this occasion. In Canada, someone fell off their 1975 model with the normal chrome not lockable cap, the cap came open and fuel spilt out all over the road. The authorities were not at all impressed and refused to take any more 400/4's utill the cap was made more secure. Hondas answer was to lower the cap into to tank and fit a locking flap for the Canadian market. If I can get in touch with the chap that lives in Toronto, I'll ask for a photo as his is a 1975, in yellow, with black side panels, no tank stripes and the locking flap in black.

Seem to recall that was someone in the USA that fell off, remember reading about it. Yanks are litigious people anyway and Honda changed the design to stop from being sued.

The odd thing is the Canadian parts book doesn't list the flap type tank, just the normal one. Shows it but doesn't have a part number for it, the USA version does.
