locking petrol cap
« on: October 20, 2023, 04:47:36 PM »
Hello Peeps,
I am looking for help with finding a key for my 1975 cb400f super sport petrol cap, it looks like it would be some kind of hollow hex key, the tank is standard and the lock looks like a standard fitmentbut no one seems familiar with it, not even David Silver ? !
Can any of you guys shed any light on this please ?
Cheers everybody.
Steve.
PS. I will post some pics if needed.

This is almost certainly what you have.

And what the keys look like.

I did have a genuine Honda NOS tank lock for the 400. The lock comes with a long screw which screws into a plate on the other side of the lock after passing through the tank loops

No offense Stevo but nowhere. No one sells these anymore. I have no idea why I have a new one myself, I did have the same lock on my 500 tank many many years ago and I had a spare key on the key ring, if I still had that key ring you'd be welcome to the key but I haven't seen that since the 80s.

You can either try and find a new one and you'd get 2 keys with that or remove and fit the proper lock like this.

Ah!
Now I see! From you description I was working the other way round!  Will a 1/4" drive 6 sided socket fit down the hole?  No scale evident, so not sure what size. You could always turn or grind down the o/d and stick it on the end of a short extension bar.

If you find the A/F size of the Hex can't you modify a driver like in this link or a 1/4" drive socket. I would chop off the head and cut a slot in one end and braze part of and old key to it. May need the O.D machining down though. Bit of a faff but just a suggestion of what I would do.
If you did do it and it needs lathe or brazing just send me the bits and I will do it for you. You could even use an old Honda key for the handle, which would make it rather cool.

I'm sure a decent clock restorer would be able to help, at a push being able to make you one but may be cheaper to just buy a new lock if not.

Hey ,
thanks you guys, what a lovely bunch you all are, very kind and helpful.
I really appreciate your comments, I will probably machine down a hex socket and tack a washer on the end .
Thanks again for taking the effort to help.
Cheers.
Steve.
