New carb linkage rods
« on: November 18, 2023, 04:32:09 PM »
I've got Max, who used to be a member on here, to make me a stainless steel linkage rod for the 500/550F carbs. The original ones as we all know tend to rust and pit for fun. In the past I've had a few hard chromed and that works well but whilst the first ones I had done cost me about £25 each the last 2 cost me £65 each. I spotted some stainless steel one being made in the USA a few months ago but after contacting the seller to enquire about the cost of making me 6 the first thing he did was increase the price, that didn't sit well with me so I declined that offer.

As I said I then contacted Max to see if he could make a few, with the idea being to fit them in carbs I'll be restoring and selling and also in case any other members wanted one. With Max no longer being on the site I thought I'd see about becoming his go between, he sells them to me and I sell them onwards to members. I may also be doing the 400 clutch basket rubbers as well in case you were wondering, he's just waiting on some more Viton to arrive to make some more.

Anyway, Max sent me a pic yesterday of the new rod and the original I'd sent to him for him to copy. I'll test the new one to see how it fits etc and if it's ok I'll order a few more but maybe after Xmas to defray the cost during what is an expensive season for most

Here's how they look.

If you're interested in one let me know so I know how many to order made. Cost will be approx £45 plus P&P onwards, say £2.

My initial order will be 5 Mick..

Possibly 2 for myself and the other 3 for anyone else, I'll mark you down for one of those.

If demand is high it might end up being first come first served as I have no idea how hard these are to make. They'll get one but might have to wait.

I'll probably sell on my hard chromed rods now or maybe fit them in carbs I'll be selling. Got a 550F set and possibly a 500K set to finish off. Plus my own of course.

Received the first rod from Max today, test fit looks to be perfect. Goes into the bushing areas just fine, good fit, no slop. Test fitted the lifter arms, woodruff keys fit good, lifter arms fit fine.

So these look to be a go IMO. I'll wait until after my hols next week and take it from there after I'm back in the country

They look very well machined Ken, certainly a good replacement in a good material.

Max has now contacted me to say he's made an additional 4 rods, so I have 5 rods in total when they arrive.

If you still want one please PM for payment details etc. Cost to me is £45 each so I'd imagine another £2 to post it onto you.

I'll be keeping 2 for myself, the other 3 are available for members.

No more rust or tarnishing, fit and forget.

I bought a 400/4 linkage from Max a couple of weeks ago, it's perfect and much cheaper than paying the £130 Philpotts wanted to re chrome my genuine one.
Max is going to be making some more for the 400/4 in the next few weeks.

I think I'll have to start charging royalties off Max, I keep suggesting stuff and he then starts to produce and sell them  ;D ;D ;D

One sold already, seem to recall Roo saying he wants one so that's 2 sold, 1 or 2 left.

I've asked him if he can make the starter cush drive rubbers for the 400/4. You can buy NOS ones from CMSNL but they are £8 each exc post and I need 8 of them. My existing ones are rock hard. I don't know if he can make them from viton as he does the clutch rubbers plus they are an odd shape being triangular in profile.

You should have asked me to get them from Yamiya with your shells Dave

350/400 uses the same damping rubbers in the primary hub as the 500/550. Cheap though, wonder how long their stocks of them will last?

In answer to that question, the answer after testing their stock levels is 2 only.

DS have them Dave at £6.41 each. 23114-323-000

Been low price there for years ... I got all of mine from Yamiya and all of my primary chains. I don't think it's a discontinued part by Honda but I will ask Dave when they are getting more.
