Security Lights

I need some advice from the SOHC collective. I want to put a couple of security lights on the house, one for the back garden and one for the garage door. The easiest solution would be solar powered LED lights with motion sensors. Somewhere in the 800 to 1200 lumens region would be bright enough. I don't need to dazzle the whole neighbourhood!
There are plenty on the market but reviews/feedback are pretty hit and miss. Many don't work at all or fail very quickly.

Has anybody got a good recommendation for a reliable light that doesn't cost a fortune?  Or am I better off biting the bullet and fitting mains powered lights?

Mains every time - fit & forget - as with bike LED's you get what you pay for.  As my garage LED is fitted on the apex of the roof I went for a separate  motion sensor. LED unit has been up since 2014, I'm on my third motion sensor water ingress seems to limit the life.

I'm with Ted, mains all the way, before the cost got prohibitive we had lights on the side of the house (2), the back of the house and by the detached garage. I changed them all to PIR LED ones, cheap as chips and reliable.
If I remember correctly they are 20W 1000 lumens and cost about £20 each from eBay.

Have a solar led on front door, dont work in winter as not enough light to charge it up.

I'm with the collec, mains all the way. I've had a couple of lights on the garage since it was built in 1996 and they are still going! I'm on my second motion sensor as like Ted said, they don't like the weather and call it quits after 10 years!

I bought three of the Aldi versions for our garage block which has no mains power.

They were cheap and do the job.  Been up about Four years.

These are worth a try for the price I have a couple down the drive and they do work in the winter not quite as well as in the summer but acceptable and they have a two year warranty

Despite the advice to go mains power I decided to try solar power. Getting a mains power supply to 2 separate walls would have worked out more expensive. I don't mess about with mains power myself anymore, getting too old.

After reading lots of reviews, not all genuine, I'm sure, I actually went to a real shop and looked at real lights in the flesh! That was a novel experience, I haven't been doing that much for quite a while.

I bought lights from Wickes, Saxby dual LED lamps with a separate solar panel that can be positioned up to 5m away from the light if necessary. They are 1400 lumens which is plenty bright enough, and even a dull, cloudy day in February provides plenty of battery charge. They seem good quality and are performing well so far. 👍
