A very lucid walk through of race car design engineering, Honda powered  :)  with many gearbox and clutch component design shared with bikes.

Quite long, but very worthwhile viewing.

Love the explaination of the gear dogs - great references to Jimmy Clark's abilty.

I have watched this over the past few days Nigel and it is pretty mind-blowing. Amazing engineering, design and execution. The design office picture took me back to my days working in the design drawing office at Acton Train Works. We had the same drawing boards with the indexing heads. For me it was the best job in the world working with the best people in the world. My official working hours were 8-4 but I loved the job so much I would work from 7:30 until 5 or 6pm, no overtime then, just a flat salary. Sometimes the boss who always worked very late would come and tell me to go home! The introduction of CAD ruined it for me and took the skill and individuality out of drawing with pen on film. There was something about transferring design thoughts from your head  into your hands and onto drawing film. 100% satisfaction was always guaranteed when you saw the design transferred from paper to metal by the skilled craftsman and put into service.

Quite a cool in depth look at the process as it was then Dave.

I started at the other end from you,  making metal into recognised components in aero R&D.

A friend's mum was draftswoman at Brooklands and on the Concorde project, but I didn't learn that in time to speak to her about that. Would have liked that inside view.

Current RB F1 team design is led by advocate of first drawn on a board as it used to be. They employ people (CAD jockey, as described in that video) to take the work downstream from there as I understand it. Not doing too badly either it seems  :)

The teacher who took me for metalwork, woodwork, TD and motor engineering worked on Concorde as a design engineer. A very talented man who built a harpsichord in his lunch hours and when it was finished he would play it in his lunch hour! He had us building a hovercraft in an after school club. We put a Villiers two stroke engine in it from an invalid car, the school was given three of them by the government for our motor engineering class when they were recalled for safety reasons. All this in a comprehensive school in Acton👍

I wish that I'd had a metalwork teacher like that!

My metalwork and electronics teacher worked on the Bluebird for the water speed record with Donald Campbell.

When I applied for my electronics apprenticeship he gave me a glowing reference and I was successful.

Not that one, my dad upgraded to a Super 7 some years later. That one is in my workshop now.
Lovely bit of kit, just not had much time to use it yet.

Looks a great bit of kit - well out of my ability zone to use any sort of lathe type machine. Never did metalwork at school as it was over subscribed in class so had to do woodwork. My Dovetail joints were the source of huge laughter to the teacher.

I often wish I had a Pillar Drill or a hand that could maintain some semblence of vertical or horizontal.

That is a great bit of kit. I didn't realise how invaluable a lathe is until I bought one.

And no, just Imperial screw cutting gears. Will see about getting metric.

Should be doable, i am fairl sure you only need the one gear to convert the gearing
