And of course historical links to our own UK Honda bikes.

Come on Ash - fill me in on the detail? The letter you posted makes sense but what do I read into this? Was it delivered to Maico? Sorry if I'm being dim!
One day I'll have the time to restore it, not just talk and dream....

It's all here Tim. There was an advert in Motorcycling Magazine requesting interest as agents in the UK  for  Honda.

It's all here in the link below Tim. There was an advert in Motorcycling Magazine in '59 requesting interest as agents in the UK  for  Honda. Maico replied and the letter was the Honda handwritten reply. There was then the formation of 'Hondis' and then lots of skullduggery from the rival Honda G.M.B.H. in Germany.

Well worth a sift through and read and a few other letters in the link too.

I've somewhat lost interest in the above Maico as the owner who has had it for the last 10 years seems to have no detailed knowledge about what work has been done to the Scooters engine etc - he is going to list it on ebay.

I'm in no rush Bryan - it was restored by an unamed person who lived in Deerfield who restored bikes for the Robin Spalding British Scooter Collection. No replies when I asked about its possible mileage has it had a rebore or crank bearings- just that it is 65 years old - in need of some touch up to bits of the paintwork.

TBH the timing is not great as I have no room to store it until / if ever I part with my 400. I'm going to the Stafford Show in April with my BiL so will meet some of the Maicoletta Owners Club again.

Spoke to another Maico seller yesterday his bike needs re- commissioning and priced at £3500. That has potential for a huge money pit.

I'm minded to bin the idea - might be easier to consider a more modern alternative such as a Forza if I need the scooterish experience again.

I know it doesn't have the rare classic appeal of the Maicoletta or the talking point when you stop somewhere but you will not be disappointed with the Forza - I'm just about to jump on mine again for a decent ride and it's a great piece of kit.  Can only speak about the 350 version.
I'm also looking forward to my big trip to Holland/Germany/Austria from Orkney on it with two other couples - I'll be solo, so not quite as outclassed!  At 74 (75 while I'm away) I don't know how many more adventures are left!

Had a great ride out today Ted - just good to be out in the (slightly) better weather - missed all the showers but roads still dodgy from the very necessary farm traffic and a few extra pot-holes.  We now have all of our accommodation and ferries to and from Europe sorted.  It will probably be a 3000 plus trip and the others have not been over there before.  We used to go a couple of times a year by GoldWing so this will be quite different for me with no rear s(e)at nav (Christine!) and a much smaller, lighter bike.

From Scotland I would be tempted to take the Newcastle - Norway party boat and ride down from there - that would add in Norway + Denmark & possibly Sweden too!

Hi Andy thanks for the info,
We have used the Newcastle/Ijmuiden crossing before but this time, for various reasons we have already booked Hull/Rotterdam (I am from Hull) and as I have travelled numerous times from Europoort down to our first 3 nights in the Mosel valley and know the route well, that seemed favourite.  The others can do some of the other navigating on other legs.  Years ago, Christine and I would just rack up and seek 'Pensionen und Gasthäuser' on the fly but it could prove more difficult with the 5 of us, so I have booked all the accommodation - some places in Austria were already fully booked and I started just after New Year.  Things appear much different post C19.

Sorry Ted, for hijacking!

Whilst tidying up our loft Wendy found an album that she made up for my 40th Birthday these two were amongst some of the treasures, the Honda might be  2462 YG.

Kodac 124 Instanatic camera iirc lots of my photos were poor colour quality as a film would last a year & developing was expensive back in the 1970's.
